Anyone else out here interested in academic medicine? Pros Cons Salary

Pros:
Easy(ier) access to wide array of other disciplines
Resident/medical student teaching/abuse, etc.
Not having to set up a practice/buy into a practice
Malpractice insurance, benefits paid for
Access to state of the art equipment, research labs, etc. (with some variation dependent on location)
Prestige (relatively so)
Educational conferences/atmosphere
and others which I can't think of off the top of my head right now...

Cons:
Resident/medical student teaching
Possible research/publication requirement
Lower salary
"Politics" of working for an institution
Others telling you how to run your practice
Often have to live in larger cities/urban centers

Salary:
Often lower than in private practice or less control over how much you make as compared to private practice.

Just some thoughts off the top of my head...

hmmmm...quick question. is it easier to succeed in academic medicine or private practice with a non-prestigious medical degree?

my guess would be private practice, altho i am having some trouble determining what you consider "non-prestigious" and which places of academic medicine you are trying to relate to.

Especially in EM but in all fields it's possible to have an academic post while working privately on the side. Can be best of both worlds but a lot of hours.
