Hi all, I never thought this would be an issue until I saw it on PTCAS, but I was on academic probation my very first semester of undergrad. I had a lot of family issues going on at the time, and my GPA is excellent otherwise. Is it necessary for me to list this on the app? I do not want to be dishonest, but it was the very first semester. I hardly see it as a big deal, but I don't want to be disqualified over something trivial. Thanks!

Unless PTCAS asks you, then don't mention it. Just list your grades on your transcript, and be ready to explain to schools what happened that first semester.

Well the app actually asks: Were you ever the recipient of any action by any college or university for unacceptable academic performance or conduct violations?
e.g. dismissal, disqualification, suspension, probation etc.

So technically, it does ask if I was on academic probation directly on the application :/. I never got in trouble for the poor semester and there was never disciplinary action, but I still feel like I would be misleading if I left it out. Opinions?

Just be honest...explain you were on probation because of a, b and c reasons BUT after the issues were resolved my grades got better because of x, y and z reasons
Whenever you have to explain something bad like that, always come back with a "BUT I did this and this and this to be better" kind of a thing..

I'm pretty sure that the question is referring to disciplinary action for cheating ect... You should ask the PT administrator a few threads down. I'm interested in hearing the response because I was on probation my first few semesters. I plan on explaining in one of the other questions in that section

You should be honest and say yes, and explain it and how you improved since then. I don't think it will hurt your app since it happened during your first semester and you have a good GPA.

Sounds like I should put it down on the app. Well, I will give an explanation and hope for the best!

Yes, you should put it. I was on probation in my soph year and later graduated with a high GPA. Be honest & explain what happened, how you bettered yourself, what you learned from the experience, and what you accomplished.

I called my undergrad's registrar office & they told me that they don't keep on file whether or not a student has been on academic probation, so the schools I applied to could have not even known I was on it if I didn't mention it in my application. But it's best to be completely honest if anything were to come to light. PM me if you wanna talk about it.
