Hey everyone, I just had a question and wanted some input!

I am currently in an accelerated program for a degree in Medical Assisting. It's an associates degree. At my school, there are accelerated bachelors degrees as well. Would I possibly stand out if I continue my education and get a degree in Web Design from my current school, then go to a university for my science prerequisites (since my school doesn't offer science courses), or should I save my money and go to a university and just get everything out of the way from there? My GPA isn't the best in my current program (I have a 3.09 due to hardships in my past with education), but I think I can deifnitely bring it up since I'm very motivated to succeed and get into vet school. And to top it off, if I don't get accepted, I can use the time to build my application stronger (either as a MA or web designer).. I just want some advice and to see what you guys think!

Thank you guys in advance!

SAVE MONEY. VET SCHOOL IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE.

Have you shadowed a veterinarian yet?

I have, and am currently working for a veterinary hospital as a receptionist. If anything this job and the shadowing has definitely opened my eyes about my future in vet med.

I know that vet school is super expensive, I am just not sure if I could stand out with my crappy GPA at my current school if I continued with another degree from there or if I should go to my university in the area I'm at and apply to their vet school I guess.

Thank you for your reply!

If this is for sure the field for you and there is nothing out there that you think is interesting but haven’t explored yet, go to whatever the cheapest college is and do your pretequisites. Do well in them and bring your GPA up.
You said your low gpa is due to hardships in your past education. There are some schools who will ignore grades older than X number of years or ignore freshman year grades on a case by case basis. This will eliminate all classes in that time period from your GPA for that vet school, including any pretequisites you had taken so you’d have to retake them if there were any. There is also the explanation statement where you can say you had a difficult time dealing with something in the past but this is how you learned to cope with it and ensure your grades don’t slip in the future if something happens again. There are also schools who only look at last 45 and science/prereq GPAs and don’t care about cumulative gpa at all.

Go to the cheapest school you can to get your prereqs and do well in them. But make sure this is for sure the field for you and there are no other fields that would make you as happy or happier.

Ignoring everything else, I don't think getting an unrelated degree just because its an accelerated program would in any way make your application "stand out." I mean, yes a web design degree would be different and something to talk about, but if that's not your goal its not going to benefit you enough to justify taking on extra debt. This is just one vet's opinion, and I don't work on admission committees or anything, but yeah. Save the money, take the pre-reqs.
