Recently received an interview invite to a school within driving distance and scheduled for the earliest possible date in January. Is it appropriate to ask local schools if they have any sort of system implemented to reschedule your interview for an earlier date in the case of cancellations?

I don't think that is a problem. You might as well call and ask, just explain you live very close and are very interested in the school. You shouldn't get too much trouble for it, if any.
