Just wondering if anyone knows about how many people a school will interview related to how many students they admit. Is it a pretty consistent ratio, or quite variable? Or from personal experience how many intereviews did you have versus your number of acceptances? I'm wondering if getting an interview is something to be ecstatic about, or if there is still a huge hurdle to cross after the interview (this is assuming the interview goes well).

Anyone who's been through the process would be greatly appreciated.

I think it ranges from 30% (out of stater applying to a state school with mediocre stats) to about 90% (very early applicant with high stats to an expensive private school or in state school)

I had 4 interviews and 3 acceptances. it depends on the school but I think the generally accepted idea is that getting an interview is the hardest part, and once you have an interview as long as it doesn't go especially bad you have a good chance of getting in (at the one school i didn't get into, i knew even as i was walking out of the interview room that they hated me 🙄 ). i don't think i have ever heard of anyone getting flat out rejected after an interview, at the very least you would get waitlisted.

thanks for the responses party people

I talked to Case Western who last year interviewed around 350 people and they told me that they accepted about 95% of those interviewed. Of course they will accept way more than they have room for due to the fact that many that they accept will decline having been accepted elsewhere. I would say that an interview seems to be a really good sign. Did you get one? 👍

yeah so far i got interviews at case and uconn, and uconn is my #1 choice, so i wanted to keep a level head about my chances there.

I agree with most of what you have said, however, getting rejected after an interivew does happen (see exhibit A: me and Maryland). I wasn't surprised by this at all as my time there didn't go smoothly one bit. It's a good sign in the first place if you are invited for an interivew and I believe that if the interview goes well - e.g. you establish a good rapport with the interviewer, you get good "vibes" from the school - your chances of an acceptance are very good.

I had an experience at UNC where I felt I had one of my best interviews. I interviewed with 2 separate doctors and had great conversations and felt I was sure to get in. I was wrong, and ended up with a Dear John in late Feb. I dont know, you wonder how much the interview really matters? Are they just checking to make sure you have 2 hands and 10 fingers?

Damn UConn is already giving out interview dates. Hope I get mine soon.

Because with those stats NYU will probably offer a full scholarship at minimum a half scholarship

You have to realize that UNC is a very renowned school with many out of state applicants. At the same time, they only accept 8 each year. Odds are, you'll be rejected. I know I was. 🙂

I knew they didnt accept many of out of staters, I didnt realize it was that low of a number though. No worries, I probly wouldn't have gone there anyways since I got in my state school.
