Hi all,

Just looking to get some opinions on how I fare for this years admissions process. I made a career change in May and started from scratch with pre-reqs and hours, so it was a major push to apply at all this year. Stats posted below:

cGPA: 3.93
pre-req GPA:4.0
GRE's: 146 Q 🙁, 151 V, 5.5 AWA

Observation hours:
75 outpatient ortho, 16 inpatient, 7 acute care (hospital was very restrictive), 20 home health
118 total

EC's:
Psychology club member, then secretary, then president (3 year progression), PSI CHI honors society member, undergraduate research opportunity fellowship recipient (paid), outstanding senior academic achievement award for department of psych, opportunity scholarship recipient, health psychology research assistant, developmental psychology research assistant, abnormal psych teaching assistant, developmental psych teaching assistant, clinical research student intern at local hospital, clinical research manager for 1 year after internship at local hospital, CV with 3 manuscript publications as co-author and ~20 conference presentations both oral and poster (5 lead author, 15 co-author)

Programs: University of New England, Husson University, Franklin Pierce University, Boston University, University of Vermont

Applied 10/26, all materials (e.g. transcripts) had been received prior to this

Retaking GRE's 11/25, was told by programs my scores would be updated. Studying like a mad man.

Biggest concern is low GRE and the fact I'm applying late. UNE is to my knowledge the only one with rolling admissions. UVM and FPU have deadlines of 11/1, so just barely met those. In progress with pre-req classes (two left in Spring) so that'll likely put my app on hold at some places as well. Just worried I went nuts to apply this year for nothing.

Any thoughts/comments are greatly appreciated!

Yeah, finished at job as manager of clinical research 4/28/17, took 19 credits of condensed Anatomy/Physiology 1 and 2 with labs and Physics 1 and 2 with labs over the summer (started 5/15/17) while accumulating observation hours and studying for GRE's, building application etc. I did have the psych and stats pre reqs, but that's a very small portion of what I needed. In chem 1 and bio 1 now with labs and human nutrition to supplement, then taking chem 2, bio 2, and exercise physiology in spring 2018. GRE study for the first attempt on 9/30/17 was hell.

I think you'll get in as long as they don't have GRE minimums to meet. Most schools that I have talked to care a lot more about the Writing section, and you killed it on that section! Just re-take it if you can and try and get your Verbal and Quant up into the 150's and don't even spend time worrying about the writing section, schools usually take your highest scores from each individual section.

That’s encouraging to hear about the writing section! So I’m one percentile away at FPU for quant,but I contacted them and they did say my scores can be updated even after the deadline. Also pretty sure they said they don’t kick people out of the running for it anyways, it’s not as firm as not meeting the GPA requirement I guess. Just hate to think one score would outweigh years of work, but oh well.

I had to apply strategically because I was a low cummGPA applicant, and I was waitlisted at my state school alma mater, and accepted to 3 private schools with astronomical tuition. It's not worth it. The education I am getting is great, but at a cost. Also it's imperative to look at graduation rates and retention. That's another thing I wasn't worried about, because at that time in my life it was about getting in anywhere. My class has lost 7-8 people out of 70, some dropped for personal reasons. I have friends in other programs who say they lost 1-2 people.. some schools have more stringent grading policies and rigor (from what I've read on multiple forums and know from friends in other programs). Also, look how at how the programs curriculum are set up, if you are good at learning gross anatomy and having an exam every week for 4 weeks, with 2 practicals then BU is for you (I didn't enjoy that at all).

Thanks for the feedback! My top school right now is UNE, mainly because despite the high tuition I can continue to live at home for free, negating cost of living loans. I’ve heard what you’re saying from quite a few people, the extra tuition doesn’t always make much of a difference with quality. I’d be totally fine with going wherevers cheapest, which on my list would be Husson, which is still very close to where I’m living currently. But with their 3+3 program there’s only a few outside grads that can come in for the professional phase, and they don’t even know how many spots there’ll be until way later in the cycle. I usually don’t see a whole lot of data regarding retention rates on the program websites, have you found them there if they report them or on some report run by PTCAS? I have seen PTCAS has a pretty huge pile of data churned or each year with a bunch of stats about each program, I’ll take a look there just in case. I’ll look deeper into the curriculum too, good point! This process has been quite rushed to try and get in this year, I really just need to sit down and dig deeper into the details before moving further.

That’s my biggest fear at this point, but the only one I don’t technically meet the requirements for has been really flexible with me and their admissions department has been very helpful- they accept GRE retakes after the deadline. I’m studying hard with Magoosh for quantitative right now, not really going to worry about the other sections as much.

Congrats on getting the interview that’s amazing!! Kill it! They do rounds of group interviews I believe, and from what I’ve heard it’s not too bad.

I got an acceptance from Husson today in the mail actually!! faster than I was expecting! Haven’t heard back from UNE yet, but hoping I will soon. Deposit for Husson is due the 1/15 so hoping I’ll hear soon enough to consider all my options before dropping deposit money on a program. If UNE takes too long I’ll likely just secure my spot at Husson, and go from there. I’m torn between the two currently as I’ve heard great things about both, but Husson is also way less expensive.

Another update: took the GRE on 3 hours sleep today (crazy test anxiety) and scored 8 points higher on quant and 1 point higher on verbal (didn’t care about that as much) so now I’ll have 154 quant and 152 verbal. AWA TBD

Your GRE scores are way better than mine and so it's your GPA so I'm sure you'll get an invite soon. I know they interview all the way through February and thir deadline isn't until December 15th so there's still time. I've also heard UNE tends to have a lot of people decline acceptances because of their cost, which will open more spots for people to interview and for those who are on a waitlist. I applied pretty late October 24th, so I was surprised I got an invite when other students have been placed on a waitlist. I'm pretty excited! If I get accepted I will most definetly put my deposit in.

Yeah I had figured they might not let me use it, but still sent it just in case. The only thing I’m hoping is that they don’t keep my app on hold for my pre reqs still being in progress (in Chem and Bio 1 right now, second level of each in the spring). Husson didn’t seem to care, but I know some other places are more strict about it. I applied a couple of days after you so hopefully they get back to me soon! I’ll let you know if I hear anything!

Yeah I got that email from Sarah, mine was all set I believe since it said everything was listed on the application. It did say that I have courses to complete of course, but I don’t think that’s any reason for it to be on hold. I haven’t gotten anything from them since then so I’m not sure what’s going on.

I hope so! I got that email talking about pre reqs on November 8th so I’m a little concerned that I haven’t heard anything since then, so I’ll check in with them just in case. I feel like I should have a good shot, so I’d be disappointed if they didn’t give me an interview.

My application is still under review, per an email from one of the admissions staff. I’m hoping there’s more than one interview date in December, I’m not sure what to do about my current acceptance if I don’t hear back from UNE before my security deposit is due. I guess if I get into UNE and decide to accept, I could just forfeit my deposit but I’m not too keen about losing $500. But I’d rather be safe than get rejected from UNE and then wish I had accepted at Husson. Sorry for the rambling, it’s just a difficult situation.

I bet it is. Honestly sometimes I wish I knew what they look at when they review applications, because your stats look much better than mine, still you haven't gotten an interview from them.
Maybe they look for diversity? I've heard they like to have all kinds of students. People that come straight from completing their undergrad and people who go through a career changes like you and me.
I'm 30 years old born and raised in FL and I haven't been school since 2015. I'm hoping being on my 30's it's an advantage lol.

I’m sure diversity is something they consider. I think being a bit older and having real professional experience definitely helps. I think in my case it’s the pre req status that’s holding things up. I had talked with their admissions staff about it a while ago and they had said my application would be on hold until the academic update because of it. But then I got that email recently saying that since my classes are all on the transcript, it shouldn’t be on hold. But it could wind up being a thing like you had said where they just review those with the pre reqs complete before others just because it’s a fuller application. Nothing to do but wait now!

This is awesome, congrats! I received scores on the GRE kind of similar to your first ones - 145 Q, 164 V and am really unsure of whether to bother with re-taking the test in hopes of doing better on the quant. Seeing how much you improved inspires me to try again one last time before my deadlines.

Thank you! If you decide to retake it, I highly recommend using the online prep site by Magoosh if you haven’t already. The videos are extremely helpful but more importantly the practice questions are representative of the actual tests. They also give a score estimate provided you answer enough of questions, and calculate your average pace. I found the actual test to be easier than the practice questions they provided.

PTCAS verified my grades for this past semester and immediately after got an interview invite from UNE for March 2nd! Did you already have your interview? How did it go if you did?

They have so many people on a waitlist and they are still sending out interviews that late in the cycle?
Im starting to feel like everyone who meets their minimum requirements pretty much gets an interview invite and either an acceptance or a spot in that waitlist.
My interview went well. It was very laid back. There was about 60 people in there that day and I was the last one who got interviewed. I was given an answer 2 weeks later and I was put on a waitlist 🙁

The interview pool each session it’s close to 60 prospects. I’m not sure how many interview sessions they have held so far but to me it seems like it has definitely been more than just 300 students considering they call 60 people each session and they have been interviewing since September.
The day of my interview they said they will keep interviewing all the way till the end of January and then people who were on the waitlist (ranked) will be called as they re-rank their waitlist with other students from other interview dates.
I was also told recently you could get admitted as late as the day before classes start which seems very inconsiderate and inconvenient for some students. Specially those who live out of state and need to make living arragenmens before hand.
I still would love to go to this school, but I’m starting to lose hope.

Thanks a bunch! I'm feeling relaxed about it now but the day of I'm sure will be a different story. Staying positive though! Two good things I found out- I called the UNE admissions dept. and they said there were still spots open, so not just a fight for a wait list openings (I think) and they also said that there were no interviews in the month of February, so apparently between 1/27 and 3/2 there was nothing, which is probably why my interview was so much later. At least there was a break for a while.

That's amazing congratulations! Such an great feeling of relief and excitement getting in after all the work that's put in. I'm happy for you!

I'm definitely attending if I get in no questions asked. I'll feel bad about withdrawing after submitting a deposit at my other school, but because of the order I heard back from different places I just didn't have much of a choice. I got in to Boston University, University of Vermont, and Franklin Pierce University but have had to decline at each. Wouldn't it be nice if there was some sort of way we could decide on all schools at once so we don't waste money on tuition deposits? lol

Oh wow! Congrats on all of your acceptances that’s very impressive. I applied mostly in state (public) schools in which you know competition is real. I got rejected from all of them except NSU (private school) with same if not more expensive tuition than UNE.
I knew UNE would be my first choice if I didn’t get in any of my state schools. I applied to NSU just in case, but I really just want to move out of Florida. I can’t stand the heat all year long and I want to experience something new. My girlfriend and I are very outdoorsy people and we fell in love with Maine and the New England area, so we are very excited to move there this fall. I also thought about applying to Boston University but their tuition cost was just too much to handle, plus Boston is a very expensive city to live in. I have undergrad debt and I don’t want to pay student loans for the rest of my existence.
I’m nervous but very excited to know I got into a school on my first try and now I won’t have to wait another year to start PT school specially since I’ll be 31 this July .
Anyway ace that interview! You got nothing to worry about.

Sorry for the late reply between work and classes things have been a blur lately! My interview is tomorrow so I'm a bit nervous but hearing that it's laid back from so many people I've talked to has been comforting. I don't blame you at all about the heat, I've lived in Maine my entire life and wouldn't be able to deal with it! I'm also outdoorsy so Maine is perfect! Bar Harbor is beautiful, not sure if you've heard of it but definitely check it out. I don't blame you about BU, despite getting in I threw out that option pretty quickly just because of the overwhelming cost of tuition and living expenses. Boston would be cool (for a bit) but I've never doubted that Maine is where I want to be.

Well congrats again, fingers crossed that I get in as well so we can get the chance to have classes together! Thank you for the encouragement!

Sorry phone was being weird! Anyways he told me flat out I had a huge advantage and seemed really enthusiastic about what I told him about in general with my answers to the questions they asked. I was nervous just because it means a lot but I don’t think it could’ve gone any better. Fingers crossed!! I’ll probably find out between the 12th-16th

I really hope so!! I'll be trying to keep busy while waiting to hear back! I'm finishing up chem 2 and bio 2 this semester, looking like As so far so that's good. Yes I asked Sarah Bedell if it was the last one and she confirmed it was. Timing wise I just made it in for the interview it seems!

Have you heard from them? I remember they emailed me exactly a week after my interview.
