Greetings to all whom read this passage:

Here is my case: Looking to apply for Fall 2006

- I did not do terribly well in my undergrad biology program at Fairfield University (Science GPA 2.9). However, I put myself through and receieved a Masters of Science in Physical Therapy <Graduated May 2004>, at which I received a 3.6 GPA over 3 years of full-time school-work. Licensed and seeing patients by July 2004. I've also set myself up at another institution <starting Jan 2005 - Dec 2005) at which I will pick up my Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

- My question to the group is this....what else can I do for myself? My extra-curricular activities are many. What else should I do to put myself in a favorable position for application time?

- I have no MCAT scores to report...scheduling myself to sit in April 2005, planning to take a princeton review class.

Any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated: thank you very much for reading this far.

David,

TOTALLY apply if you want to go to med school. I became a PT before med school to enhance my treatment abilities and my interviewers LOVED it and thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Just make sure you have a clear cut reason for going into medicine and not PT.

There is also a PT forum on SDN that has a ton of PT's who went to med school.

Best of luck and if you need any advice don't hesitate to ask!

Just out of curiosity, why do you want a Doctorate in PT?

Just wondering why you went on to get a doctorate of PT and then decided to go to medical school? What was your clear cut reason to pursue medicine over staying with PT? BTW I have a buddy from U of M who is a clinical pharmacist who will be attending GW. I guess GW likes to admit people from other health care professions. Good luck to you. I hear the place is beautiful with all the construction they have been doing.

THank you very much for taking the time to respond to my thread. I do have one return question for you.....which school is GW, I'm not familar with the initials...

Thank you

George Washington University. It is a private school in Washington DC and as I have been told it is right next to Georgetown. GW has a brand new hospital and is a terrific place to go according to one of my buddies.

Are you intending to treat patients during school time or just reserving your trade for vacations and non-rotating summers?

Postscript: Thank you very much for your response to my thread, which school are you attending?

Go for it!
I wish you all the best, and as long as you're doing well in PT/DPT studies, you'll have a shot. The MCAT is the great stat equalizer, so focus on doing well on that. Also, you may be able to boost your application with research and/or publications. And think about why you're doing an MD and not PT - "I just wanna help people" won't work so well.
In light of the enormous size of med school debt, I wonder why you'd like to pursue the DPT. APTA/CAPTE hasn't made the DPT the entry level degree yet. But if you do go for it, congrats and good luck.
Best,

Going for the DPT for a few reasons...

A. With a Masters already, there aren't that many classes to complete the 'transitional DPT' program, thereby making the debt nothing I can't manage, especially since I'll be working.

B. A few of the courses for the transitional program are: Pharmacology, Diagnostic imaging, referrals for out of scope of PT--> obviously not in MED-school depth, but a nice introduction.

C. I mentioned my undergrad grades weren't spectacular, so I'm doing anything and everything to erase Dave of the past. Believe it or not....saying you have a Masters and saying you have a Doctorate to an admissions board elicit two different responses

Good point BTW! I was already planning to submit a Case Report when I have something worthwhile to write about...!!!

Thank you very much for responding!

Dave

PS: Has anyone on this talk-serve attending University of Miami School of Medicine....that I believe is my number 1 choice as of right now!!!!! How do they feel about PT's?

I actually decided to go to medical school during my junior year of undergraduate school before I matriculated into the graduate portion of my 6 year program. I respected PT so much and was so excited about the skills I would gain, I continued and finished the doctorate. I've gained a TON of examination and treatment skills, and I'm only 2 years post undergraduate (usually some people take time off and work during this time). I've learned about the clinical process, healthcare system, and much more. I would be happy practicing PT except that I need more autonomy in my practice and decision making abilities. It's not to say I don't like working in a health care team or would not refer in the future as an MD. It's simply that I want a greater set of tools in my toolbox for examination and treatment. I want what is best for my patients in the future and if I can utilized manual therapy and consult on therapeutic exercise to decrease pain and improve function, it translates in my mind as a smaller dosage of medication and improved self-management of the patient's health. I'm very proud to be a PT going to medical school. I think it's a great pathway to medicine.

I think I've spoken to your friend on SDN. IDPHARM I believe his name. GW seems to like other health care professionals and grad students. When I went for my interview I met a chiropractor and about 4 people I've met on SDN who are going to be first years have a doctoral degree of some sort... PharmD, DPT, PhD's. A couple also have MPH's. So it'll definitely be a varied, but experienced class. I'm excited!

Not sure yet if I'll be working as a PT during summer or school. I'm debating an MPH which might take up that time. But then again I might want to curb some of that debt. We'll see.

I'll be going to GW in August.

I had a 3.87 Science GPA, 3.82 overall, 3.6+ in PT school, awesome extracurrics and a 29M on the MCAT 8V,11P,10B. It was one of my top three choices (GW, Miami, NYU). I'm not sure if they are more inclined to accept instate students or they didn't like I was a PT, but they were one of only a few schools that didn't give me an interview. Was it a mistake to apply there? Nah, I was hoping that I'd make the interview a mini-vacation but oh well. C'est la vie and I'm psyched about GW. That's my $0.02.

Yeah, from what I hear U Miami really looks at instate persons first...which is why the plan is to move down to Miami Fall 05 and establish residence working as a PT.....sunny days and golf --> can't go wrong!

Haven't heard anything re: U of Miami.

Your plan sounds well thought out...I wish you the best of luck. I'd love to be a fly on the wall as your med school interviewers say "Dr. dbuck, explain why you want to be in medical school..." GO FOR IT!

Good luck.
