I just received a letter today stating that I was accepted to WVCOM, and I haven't filled out a secondary or even interviewed! This happen to anybody else?

I am so glad you posted this message! I just got the same thing today, and I am so excited! The only thing is, I am applying to a lot of other schools and I don't want to commit to WVSOM before I am sure that it is definitely where I want to go. I don't know if I can decide what to do by September 30th. It's a huge deposite. I can't afford to pay it just to hold my seat while I continue in the application process. What are you going to do?

I think I need to visit Lewisburg soon.

Congrats to the both of you. But I was just wondering, what was your stats that you were accepted and bypassed the interview stage?

Congrats! I've never heard of any school doing it.

yeah...the deposit and the deadline are what have me worried. WVCOM is one of my top schools, but I'm hesitant to commit without visiting the school and area.
my stats are nothing impressive: 28M, 3.89 total, 3.95 science (state school). I do have tons of health care experience however.

I just found a place on their website where they say that if you have a 3.5 science GPA and a 28 composite MCAT, you get an immediate admission to the school. Unfortunately, you have to put in a $3000 deposite to hold your spot. I wonder if they will throw me back into the regular applicant pool and let me interview. Then if I get accepted again, I would have until December 15th to pay $2000 to hold my seat.

I really don't know what to do... I am thinking of going to Lewisburg on Wednesday or Thursday to see the school (if I can schedule a tour for one of those days).

They want to build up their stats. Some schools do this for students that have interviewed and or been on alternate list and not accepted as well.
It happens. What is interesting is that if a student had known that going in they might have saved that very same $2000 by not reapplying..... 😱

i thought that was only for early admission, but i might be wrong. also, did you guys submit your letters before getting these offers? my file states that it's incomplete, but their faq thing says to wait until a secondary/interview invitation before submitting letters. very weird.

Did you check online? Mine doesn't say anything and I'm wondering if it is somehow broken.

I didn't send them letters of recommendation. In fact, I didn't send them anything other than AACOMAS. When I saw an envelope in my mailbox from them today I thought it was an interview invite... I was quite surprised to find the acceptance letter. I agree with everyone that this whole thing is weird.

Hi

It says on their website that if you have high stats, you may get automatic admissions.

Wow, didnt know any schools did that, good to know. Do any other schools do the same, or something similar?

You funny homie, LOL

http://www.wvsom.edu/StudentAffairs/Admissions/EarlyDecision.htm

from this it states:

The Early Decision Plan may allow the highly qualified medical school applicant the opportunity to gain immediate admission to the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. With seating limited, applying early is highly recommended.
Qualifications

To qualify for early decision the applicant must:

1. Meet a minimum science GPA of 3.5 or higher.
2. Earn a composite MCAT score of 28 or higher.
3. File the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS) application.

If a student meets the above criteria, they may receive an immediate letter of acceptance if seats are available. Students meeting these criteria will not have to undergo an interview; however, students are invited to schedule a time to tour the school.

In order to hold the seat, students will need to fill out a supplemental form including a small fee. Students will also be required to pay a $3,000 non-refundable deposit within three weeks of notification. This deposit will go toward your tuition once you matriculate. Letters of recommendation, official college transcripts, and other required forms must also be submitted prior to matriculation.

It doesn't seem to say whether or not this is a traditional early decision program in which the applicant has to apply only to that school. I'm assuming it is not because it took the OP by surprise. It does seem odd for a medical school to accept students without an interview; however, it seems that most other graduate programs do indeed accept students without an interview. Perhaps they are trying to increase their out-of-state student population, since their fees for out-of-state are over $43,000, while those for in-state are like $17,000. Also, currently only like 21% of out-of-staters that are accepted choose to enroll at WVSOM.

Is this "immediate" admission for state residents only?

I'm an Ohio resident.

Having an acceptance letter so early is definately a pleasant surprise!

To shed some light on why this is happening, WVSOM has recently gained approval to double it's class size. As such, they are building two new state-of-the-art lecture classrooms and they just finished the new admissions center. The anatomy lab is also being added on to. This early acceptance program is definately to help accomidate this change.

I don't know much about the early acceptance deal, but if you want to hold your spot, you have to send in the 3,000 bucks. I advise you to come up here and scope the place out before doing so. I enjoy it here and it is a great fit for me personally, but you really should visit the campus before making a final decision.

Anyway, I hope this helps in some of the confusion... now that I've finished replying to all the WVSOM threads, I shall go back to my USMLE/COMLEX step 1 prep 😉

Are they planning to reach the goal of doubling their class size for the Fall 2006 incoming class?

what are they going to do in this building? interview?
I believe so because some people were commenting during my orientation how the new interviewees wouldn't be sitting around outside the student lounge to wait for their interview.

These aren't official numbers but I think the class of 2010 will be 170-180 with the full expansion being within 2 years after. I believe the large new classrooms will be ready next year. They are making considerable progress on the project already.

I guess the new building is to provide a fancy place to interview at but I wish it was actually attached to the main building. One of the things I liked about my interview was that I could see students walking to their mailboxes. They'd stop by and chat with me for a bit.
