Accepted but Want to Defer

Hi all,
So far this cycle Ive been accepted into several schools, but i recently decided that I want to defer my enrollment for 1 yr. Basically I wanted to know if schools will typically grant a 1yr deferral or if it is more of a rare occurrence. Thanks

if your reasoning behind it is to do full time research or something productive then they can grant a year's deferral. But if it's to travel the world and find yourself, they may say no

Schedule a meeting with the dean of admissions and explain your rationale for wanting to defer, what your plans are, and how they'll be constructive for you. The worst s/he can do is say no. The activity would generally have to be something that would be seen, in the dean's eyes, as something that would help make you a "better doctor," which is obviously up for them to decide.

The dean I spoke with said he would be willing to grant a deferral to teach high school for a year. However, he said he denied a request to be a blackjack dealer for a year, with the person's rationale of increasing social skills.

I got a year deferment when I had my retinal detachment....but that is a pretty good reason. It varies from school to school...and you will really need to talk to the dean.

Hmmm.. well I certainly view my reason as a good one. I want to use the time to compete in a motorcycle racing association, since this is the last realistic chance i'd have to do it. but i doubt that most deans are going to view this as a very productive or important activity. then again, it never hurts to ask

Never hurts to try. Go ahead and ask.

Some schools are very open to deferrals and don't care what the reason is, while other s won't grant it under any circumstance. Your MSAR will tell you which ones won't let you do it.
