I was accepted to MSUCOM recently, and have a year off before I begin summer 2014. I didn't have much planned on doing on my year off; so I was wondering what everyone else here who has been (or will be!!) accepted has planned? Just to get some ideas of fun things to do 🙂

I might visit Europe later in the year. I also started making things out of wood, such as a study table for all of the massive studying we will be doing in med school!

Let me know!

I would be working and saving my money. Make sure your credit has no glitches, nothing in collections. Check your credit score as any problems with it will affect your loan money. If there are issues with your credit, now is the time to fix them. Make sure you have no issues with the IRS either.

Travel now while you can, it's going to be 7+ years before you will have the time and/or the money to do so. Congratulations on your accepted, it's the beginning of the rest of your life.

sleep.

don't work if you do not have to. do not study at all.

Aren't most loans through FAFSA? I thought federal loan disbursements dispense regardless of FICO score.

Not always. Sometimes private loans are in the mix. Regardless, the medical school will expect you have run your credit report and fix any issues with it. Better to know now. I know this because I had an issue that my ex-husband caused that I didn't know about. My loans for medical school were delayed until I got my credit report issue fixed.

I'm working as an EMT for an ambulance company right now but I'd like to get a job somewhere else instead, like at a hospital or doctor's office, for the remainder of my year off. Any ideas on what kinds of jobs I should apply to? I don't want to have to get another certification though.
none. you should sleep.

I think I've seen a thread like this before...

I was looking for fun hobby ideas and now you are all scaring me about loans... 🙁 lol

I'm really liking the sleep idea... A lot. So any sort of studying won't be helpful? Or is it just not useful since you get everything presented so well in med school?

there is just no way you will be able to study at this point the amount of material you will be expected to know in anatomy.

I'm always confused when I see these threads. Do the majority of SDNers live with their parents/not have significant others? The answer for me is to work-- bills need to be paid!

my initial plan after I get accepted to pharmacy school was to do whatever I haven't have done.
For instance, school starts at Aug 2014, and I'm accepted around October.. so I'll be having about 8-10 free times.

I made a list of what i haven't done/what I want to do and matched it.
Travel coast to coast is one thing that i really want to do in my life time.
Volunteer at somewhere else that I've never been before will be another great experience.
Playing video games or computers are not too intriguing because i used to play too much games X)

anyways, use your free time wisely. Once you start school, you will not have that much free time anymore.

I need to figure out something as well, haha. I didn't expect my cycle to be completed this early! Was thinking about traveling to Europe next summer as well so that could be awesome. For now, I want to move and experience a new city while working for a half year or so. Thinking either Chicago or Denver right now, as I love both. Anybody wanna help me decide between the two? 🙂

Getting a working vocabulary in a common foreign language is a good use of your time, methinks. Aside from doing what I do to pay bills, my gap year will be spent learning Spanish.

I'm not even kidding...I always thought spending the year as a limo driver would be incredible.

Haha very good question! I moved back with my parents for the year off, make the transition easier. Also the significant other part, it's difficult to find someone who understands what rigor I (we) will be going through when I start school. If they can't handle it, there is no reason to date someone before starting school, when it will probably end when I begin. So I made sure to end all of those kind of relationships in my year off. I don't know if that was the greatest idea, but it felt right.

I have friends living in both Denver and Chicago. It's a tough decision, but I would have to say Denver. It's such an amazing city, and I loved it.

I already know three languages 😛. A fourth might be overkill lol

I was just accepted at CCOM and I an on finishing my 6th season ski patrolling in Vail, hopefully getting a trip with my family in, and then making my move and readying myself for life out of the mountains. Fun and focus is my goal.
