1. Do we have to take this at our future program or anywhere?

2. The course is over $200... we have to spring for this ourselves? Any less expensive alternatives?

3. How much time do you need to study prior to starting the course?

You will take ACLS exams every 2 years for the rest of your life.
I think your residency program should cover the expenses.
Study time: hmm... 30 minutes?

And if you're not in a residency yet, just visit your dean and shame him/her into paying for the course since it's embarrassing for their medical students not to be certified in BLS and to a lesser extent ACLS. Worked for me.

Its free at my med school. I will get to take in on my ER month.

If you have not yet received info from your internship, you should soon, and it will likely contain info on an ACLS class. I took mine first class right before my internship orientation, as did many of my fellow interns. I think they charged me $1 for the ACLS card or something like that. Since it was right before orientation, the department considered that part of my internship and paid me for those 2 days.
