How realistic is it for an Asian candidate to go to US med school when her stats are approx 3.3 cumGPA and 3.3 sciGPA and 29 MCAT..to a US MD school? Especially when she has her mother as a full professor on the faculty. Barely any ECs and no research. Just applied about a month ago in the cycle. Just got called for an interview a few days after sending in secondary.

I'm not trolling or even gunning. Happy for the girl, but not gonna lie, kinda jealous too. =(

Just realized this is probably the wrong forum. Feel free to change forum, mods.

According to LizzyM there will always be some "courtesy interviews" every cycle to appease important people associated with the Med School. But if the person doesn't have the stats and the softs for the particular school they don't stand much of a chance when the AdCom meets (basically it will be very obvious during AdCom meetings that the person with the courtesy interview has no business being there)

Yet, on the other hand, there are some instances where someone with exceptionally low stats has so much charm and poise and maturity that the interviewer(s) are so impressed that they make a strong case for the applicant if there is any chance they could keep their head above water in med school (generally an MCAT >26 and a gpa >3.2 or something).

In other cases, having all the money in the world for tutors and charm to spare is not enough to go from an interview to an offer of admission as much as it seems as if the academically marginal candidate would, in the end, be a great doctor in terms of ability to connect with patients, offer a good bedside manner and so forth.
