I had a quick question about my primary. I took an engineering class where I worked in a group in order to design something for a client in the community. Basically, it seems like a very good community activity, but the problem is that it is a required class. I am only asking about this because I am a bit low on quantity of activities. Do you guys think this is legitimate to add on my primary?

Thanks

Did it require significant work outside of class? Did it have a significant impact upon your development as a future physician? This question often comes up with research required for class and the answer is generally no, it does not qualify as an additional activity. However, if you believe your experience was extraordinary in some way or had an especially salient influence on your education an argument could be made to include it.

The decision comes down to this: would you be able to defend the activity by describing its impact on you, should you be asked incredulously at interview "A class project?" If so, list it. If not, don't.

Thanks for the resonse. It did impact my development as a future physician (I mentioned it in my PS) and it did require significant work outside of class. I could defend it if asked about it in an interview, but I'm just worried an adcom might be annoyed at the fact that it is a class, regardless of what I say about it.

Any other opinions?

You can talk about it since you had significant service outside of class. But, make sure you explain the stuff that you did. You don't want an ADCOM to think you wrote this to fill space. Also, the ADCOM might ask a question about this experience, but you won't have to defend your actions. It will more like how this experience changed you.

The activities section is labeled "experience", not "extra-curriculars" and it becomes obvious after you've seen a few that people do list things that they did as part of a class (e.g. "community service" with the homeless as part of a sociology class, research for credit, shadowing as part of a "exploring the health professions" class). No worries.

Alright, thanks for the responses, I think I will add it.
