Hey all,

I applied this cycle, but with only one II so far which turned into a wait list, I obviously need to start thinking about reapplication. I have been mostly volunteering as an intake/scribe for a nonprofit community clinic primarily serving the local uninsured Hispanic community. I work with many retired doctors (who are still licensed and oftentimes very willing to teach/talk due to the lack of pressure) of many different specialties. Personally the experience is very fulfilling and a great opportunity for me to serve an underrepresented population as well as learn about their stories/challenges. Unfortunately due to the erratic nature of a nonprofit clinic, some weeks I may only volunteer for 10 hours while others I can reach 25+ hours. So far I've accumulated around 350 hours.

My alternative is to scribe part time under ScribeAmerica at a urology clinic. I would still be working 25 hours a week, leaving time for other volunteering activities. Unfortunately I would largely have to stop volunteering at the nonprofit clinic due to scheduling conflicts. The pay is poor but at least I would make some money. I have previously accumulated nearly 750 hours scribing in an ER however, so I feel that other than the outpatient setting and new specialty, the experience would be a bit redundant for my application.

Thankfully I am privileged enough that money is not a primary concern, and my parents are willing to support me before medical school, but obviously it does weigh on my conscious to be taking advantage of their generosity so much. Any advice on which opportunity would be best worth my time? Thank you for reading!

What about nonclinical volunteering?

What about nonclinical volunteering?

Thanks for linking my previous WAMC I did not know you could do that. A lot of my nonclinical volunteering are those "other volunteering activities" I mentioned done during the time I have off not working at the clinic. I do plan to continue them, but as a note I have already accumulated 150 food bank hours and 100 prison tutor hours which, to my knowledge, is an adequate amount of nonclinical volunteering for application purposes.

Continue to build those hours. 150 hours is adequate to avoid getting screened out, but you still have to meet expectations of individual schools in what you do with those hours as well.
