Anyone know if anemia is generally a problem in this disease? It's a defect in porphobilinogen synthase, which is required for heme synthesis (as far as I know). Where would we get the heme from then? Or is the specific isoenzyme mutated not found in RBCs (eg, only found in hepatocytes)?
