I heard adcoms google applicants as needed to look into their social profiles or other achievements. I'm wondering if they don't find any social media accounts? Is that viewed not favorably as they are not that social?

I don't have a single social media account like Instagram or Facebook and my name is very unique so if I were to get one, it would be on the front page of google.

Is this a disadvantage to not have any social media accounts?

Wishful thinking?
The concept of "they don't have to time to do that" is dangerously ignorant of the admissions process. That's the second time today I've noticed you doing this. Do us a favor and wait until you're actually taking part in med school admissions before you bloviate more dangerously inaccurate info.

With a seller's market, and we Adcom members being the filter between you and patients, you damned well better believe we'll reject people for poor judgment. Nobody, and I mean nobody has a right to a seat in medical school and a career in Medicine. This is a privilege that is earned.

@Goro Thanks for clarifying that up in your statement that adcoms do look at this stuff. What happens if you look something up and find out they don't have a social media profile?

Good, I don't have time for social media. I see it as a major problem with society today. People don't interact personally as they used to.

It isn’t necessary. Just be aware that should you be accepted, it won’t be a bad idea to have a facebook account. Most, if not all, schools have class FB groups where a lot of communication is sent out, where you can meet your classmates, and just other various things like housing and whatnot.

Non issue as you apply.

This ^^

Plus, you always have the option to change your name on FB. A few of my friends in the professional world go by either their middle names or nicknames on FB for anonymity.

I think there are many bigger problems in society, lol.
I'm not saying it's the biggest but there's definitely a change in social skills walking around college campuses today compared to when I went back in 05.

Not really, I think you might just be noticing the social awkwardness more.

I would say with two equally qualified applicants, the one with the dankest memes is selected for admission. No social media account hurts you if you post only the highest quality, dankest, most fire memes. However, you have to consider that your taste in memes, given your social media isolation, likely is poor. In this case it may be advantageous that you don't have social media accounts as posting bad memes is the equivalent of -0.15 cumulative GPA or -2 MCAT points, whichever is greater.

No social media gang

If you're really worried you can always make a LinkedIn! I don't see social media accounts being all that helpful to med school admissions and I often hear about it being more harmful for students.

One way I could see social medias being helpful for students is if you have a very specific hobby or interest or sport. You could post pics now and then to showcase your talent but I would still advise against posting more personal things on social media.

Just make sure you take your ACT/SAT off. Like goddamn

Keep the MCAT though to show you're an alpha

There are multiple studies showing the negative effects of social media and electronic devices in general in children and adolescents. If you don’t think it effects adults too, you loco.

Facebook is bad, mmmkayyyyyy

Facebook isn’t inherently bad. Obsessive use of it and placing a lot of your personal worth into your Facebook persona and how popular you are on it can be. Unfortunately, kids and adolescents are prone to doing just that.

We don't care.

I got Facebook and Instagram. Do you guys think I should get a Twitter as well and post memes on there? Or are my bases covered?
