Well I was just about to submit my MD application when I got an email from the PI of a lab I collaborate with. He wants me to apply to the MD/PhD program at his institution. I see there are two more essays required for the AMCAS MD/PhD application. If I turn in my AMCAS app now, is it possible to add an application to an MD/PhD school later (and also add those two additional essays)? I want to turn in my AMCAS app as soon as possible and don't want to delay it while I write these essays. Thank you!

You can still add letters, apply to new schools, etc. as long as it's within the deadline for that particular school. AMCAS will simply have you select the school, the type of program, and which letters you wish you attach to that school's packet. It'll also take you to a great new page where you...reenter your credit card info to pay the additional $35 or so since you're adding a new school.

If you've ALREADY applied to that program, and they ask for essays as part of the primaries, my gut is that you are NOT allowed to submit those essays unless it's at the same time as you apply. Thus, hold off on applying to that particular program until you've got everything in.

No, you have to submit the MD/PhD part with the MD application

I believe he's already applying to that school as MD

"is it possible to add an application to an MD/PhD school later..." Sounds like he wasn't going to apply to that school, period, but has just decided to do so, under the MD/PhD route. If that is the case, then I'd submit the AMCAS to all other schools, and hold off from applying to that school until EVERYTHING required for the app for that program is in. If I misunderstood, then oh well, the advice still stands. OP, don't apply to that program until you have all of your requirements in. You can still apply and submit NOW to the other programs, and just add this program in on a later date.

Thanks for your help guys. Sorry if that was unclear. The problem is I don't have the two additional essays AMCAS requires for an MD/PhD application. This is the only MD/PhD application I want to submit. I want to submit my MD application then later add a new school and submit to that as an MD/PhD application. What I'm wondering is if I will then be able to upload these two additional essays.
And I was not planning on applying to this school for regular MD but if you think that would change anything I would do that haha.

You can add your essays to ACMAS when you get them. Then, after they are checked in and received on AMCAS, you can go to "schools" and select "add new school", or whatever it says, and then select that program. Just submit your AMCAS now. You'll be early to get verified, and earlier at all other schools. Just don't yet add in the MD/PhD program. Some schools will automatically consider you for MD if MD/PhD doesn't go through, while others may not, or may allow you to select both, but again, I don't quite remember.

Thanks Kelevra! Just to confirm, letters aren't the issue for me, it's just the essays. I read the quote below on AMCAS, and was worried that I won't be able to make changes such as adding two new essays after it has been submitted and certified.

"After the initial submission of your application, you may only make changes to the following information:

  • Your ID numbers.
  • Your name, including full legal name, preferred name, and alternate names.
  • Your contact Information, including your permanent address, preferred mailing address, and e-mail address.
  • Your alternate contact information.
  • Your date of birth and sex.
  • Letters of evaluation (although please note that you can only make additions of up to 10 letters, and you must notify AMCAS if you have a letter you wish to no longer be sent to medical schools; you cannot delete letters of evaluation from your application).
  • Your next MCAT testing date.
  • The addition of medical schools and the altering of existing program types (deadlines, restrictions and an additional fee may apply).
  • The release of your application information to your pre-health advisor."

Oh, jesus, I'm not sure why I was thinking letters. Aneurysm, I suppose.

Anyways, then yes, don't submit (to that program) until you have your essays.

Thank you! Just saved me frantically writing two essays this weekend.
