It has been a long time since we've had a suggested list of books on the forum. I read a review today of a book that might be of interest to folks looking to go into surgery, emergency medicine and/or military medicine:
Good Medicine, Hard Times by Edward P. Horvath.

I'm currently reading The Emergency A Year of Health and Heartbreak in a Chicago ER by Thomas Fisher.

Both authors are MDs.

What have you read lately that was inspirational and/or informative.

The Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe by Dr. Steven Novella should be on every list of prep materials when it comes to studying for the psych section of the MCAT. Plus, it’s a fun read

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman, Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, Down the Rabbit Hole by Dr. Allan Ropper, My Own Country by Dr. Abraham Verghese, and Being Mortal by Dr. Atul Gawande are good titles to start with.

Edited to add: The Brain Under Siege by Dr. Howard Weiner, Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan, and The Neuroscientist Who Lost Her Mind by Dr. Barbara Lipska are good neuroscience reads.

I read The Health Gap by Dr. Michael Marmot very early on in my Pre-Med journey, and it had a significant impact on me. It is the main reason why I began aiming for an MD-MPH degree.

Red Blanket by John Harch M.D.
He is a retired trauma surgeon who just published his memoir about surgical training at USC. Hilarious and terrifying.

War Doctor: Surgery on the Front Line by David Nott MD

The Butchering Art: Joseph Lister’s Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine by Lindsey Fitzharris

Playing Doctor: Television, Storytelling, & Medical Power by Joseph Turow PHD
