Hey!

I was wondering whether it is advisable to try to add a new LOR to your application before interviews are offered by a school but after submission of a secondary. I just finished a summer research experience, and my PI was interested in writing me a strong LOR which I thought might add a new element to my app.

Would this be too much of a hassle for admissions committees? Should I wait until after admissions decisions have been released and only send the letter if I am waitlisted?

My university has a premedical committee which writes a composite letter and attaches my LORs with it, but this new LOR would obviously not be in the packet submitted.

Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks!

How does one typically go about adding a new LOR? Do we request our writers to mail to AMCAS? How do we notify our schools about an additional LOR, if our secondary has already been submitted?

Sorry for all the questions!

Definitely do it. I did this last cycle (although it didn't help 🙁 ). There's no way it should hurt you, only help you, so why not do it?

Just add the letter writer to AMCAS, which will give you the letter ID. Let the writer send the letter to Interfolio. You should create that LOR in interfolio and give the letter # to the writer when they upload it so the system can match it. Once it has been uploaded, send it to AMCAS with the AMCAS letter ID attached so they can match it. Soon, you'll see it uploaded in AMCAS and then to schools eventually. If they have downloaded your other letters already, you should call or email them to let them know that you've added another letter. That way they'll know to update your file by downloading the extra letter. Otherwise, they won't know that you have an additional letter so won't bother to check your AMCAS to download the letter
