I know that if you try to add on a lot of things (shadowing, research, etc) before you apply it looks bad. However, recently the hospital/medical school redid their research department and got a lot more funding. There are some really cool research projects I want to join, but I'm nervous adcoms will just see it as me trying to "check boxes" at the last second.

I have previous research experience, but nothing like this where it would be on going for at least a year.

Advice?

It's not that it's bad to do something new just before you apply, it's that it's bad to ONLY do things right before you apply. Not participating in something you want to do because it's too close to when you're applying is silly, of course you can do that.

Do it if you really want to. If you do it for the right reasons, nothing to be worried of.

Do it if your interested in actually doing it. Don't do things because you think they'll look good, you'll just be miserable and it won't look good.
