Hello:

I have a particular subinternship at one of the hospitals I would like to end up at.

However, this sub-I runs from 8/30 to 9/27

Assuming I do a good job and the attending likes me, then that means at least a week or so to get a letter finalized and prepared to send in. We're talking first week of October.

If I wanted to use that one as my fourth LoR, then:

1) Should I just apply to that program with 3 LoR at first via ERAS on 9/15.. and then add on that fourth one when it is available?
(Is this even a choice?)

or

2) Wait until all letters are in and then submit, fully well knowing that I will have delayed my application.

The rest of my application is very strong, so I am not *overly* concerned about a delay, if it is necessary

If someone can shed some light, that woudl be great. Thanks

I plan on doing this...

Edit: #1 that is. Submitting all the stuff early and then adding on accessory letters from sub-i's later.

So on 9/15 apply everything.

For that particular program, as that fourth letter comes in, there is an option where I can add it as an addendum?

The only thing you can't change in ERAS after you submit is your CAF. You can upload new LORs, put in a new/first PS, change AOA status, etc.

Not exactly. You can only submit 4 LOR's. Once you have 4 submitted, you can't add any more.

For the program in question, it really doesn't matter. They're going to know all about you. Whether they get their own letter or not is meaningless.

For the other programs you've applied to, it's much more important. I would submit 3 letters now, save one slot for this SubI letter.

Is this true? If so I might have hurt myself. I have four letters in ERAS and am going to have to add a radiology letter shortly after September 15th. Its my only rads letter!

Sending letters into ERAS is different than assigning them to programs. You can submit as many letters as you want to ERAS. You can only assign 4 per program. You are totally fine.

What's CAF? Thanks 👍

So I submitted already. I have another away subI in surgical subspecialty that doesn't finish until mid-OCt. should I also save one spot for this letter? THis person is a big name. Currently I have 4 letters

Thanks for the answer, but I have one more question. Most programs consider your application complete with 3 and sometimes even 2 letters, would they read the 4th one if you add it on later? I know it'll differ between programs, but what is it generally like, as I think this is likely a fairly common occurrence? Do programs get notified automatically when a new letter come in, or is it just added to my profile silently and I need to call their attention to it?

I ask because I recently (as in today) just assigned a new letter to all of my schools. It's a letter from my Program Director who was an attending during my medicine Sub-I, and he told me that it would be a strong letter. I feel that a letter like this could boost my application appreciably, so I would like to know if I need to notify the schools that I have yet to receive interviews from about this letter.
