I posted a similar thread in the postbacc section, but figured i'd get more help here. I'm waiting to hear back from SMP's, but as we're all aware, AMCAS submission opens up soon. The question is: Is there some way I can add an SMP after I submit; as in, IF I get accepted? I know AACOMAS has a grade update, but what about AMCAS? Can I update AMCAS/schools to tell them I got accepted into an SMP and i'll be sending first semester grades after it ends? Is there some sort of a "maybe I will take an SMP" type option in AMCAS?

Many secondaries will have a section that asks you to give any new updates (ie. grades, schooling, job, publishing, etc

It's stupid to apply to med schools before you finish the entire academic year of an SMP, if you must do one.

The reason i'm doing is incase I don't get the score I want on the MCAT, I have a fallback plan.

an SMP is for helping with your grades, it has nothing to do with your MCAT? If your GPA is low you should complete the SMP, see where your MCAT score is (retake within the next year if not where you would like) and apply next cycle

Well my cumulative GPA is horrible because of me not putting enough effort into my undergrad psych degree. My post bacc gpa is 3.90, and it was my first attempt taking a premed curriculum, so i'm not sure how that would be considered. So an SMP is probably gonna be my best option unless I totally destroy the MCAT.

You're not supposed to apply until you have the best possible packet, even if it means skipping an app cycle. You are engaging in behavior contrary to your best interests. Adcoms and screeners pick up on this.

I appreciate the comments. I should clarify that for MD (AMCAS) i'm just submitting one application to a school i'm most likely not going to get accepted in just for verification. Then, once my scores are released I can decide from there. If I blow the MCAT out of the water then I don't see it hurting to apply to MD schools. Meanwhile, judging from my practice exams I should at least be able to get a good enough MCAT for SMP's. Also, with SMP deadlines already around the corner, I don't see the harm in doing so.

I've been studying for my MCAT in a while, and work on my apps after studying.
