Hi guys, I was thinking of transferring to Adelphi University and majoring in Biology...I wanted to ask if anyone goes here or has some idea on how education is like in this college.

second, what kind of school are you transferring from? (J.C. or State U?)

I'm a sophomore in NYIT (in the BS/DO program) and I wanted to major in biology because I was reading some previous posts in SDN and it mentions that majoring in biology prepares you the best for medical school.

I was thinking of transferring to St. John's at first, but the high tuition is holding me back. Then I found Adelphi University, but I want to know how education is like there and if teachers are good (especially for classes like organic chem). I mainly want to go to a college close to my house because I don't want to dorm.

My general impression of the school is disorganization. The experiences of myself/friends/family have been moderately good professors but very poorly run administration and advising. Note that these experiences are not based on the Biology department but have involved other, sometimes related, programs. My personal opinion is that if you are going to stay on Long Island in the Garden City area, you are better off heading to Hofstra.

Are you serious? Why are you even considering if you are accepted into an accelerated BS/DO program, it sounds like you have a sweet deal...

Students in this program complete their baccalaureate preparation in three years and may then be admitted directly into the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, which requires four years for the D.O. degree. Following the completion of three years at the undergraduate school, students may qualify for admission into NYCOM only if they have maintained a 3.30 overall cumulative average and a 3.0 in the sciences, received a combined MCAT score of 24 and at least an N on the writing sample, obtained favorable letters of recommendation from the departmental premedicine committee and received a supportive interview from NYCOM’s admissions committee. The bachelor's degree will be conferred upon successful completion of the first year at NYCOM.

You will be hard pressed to get into any MD program, and indeed a lot of DO schools too with numbers that low. I almost cant believe the required numbers are that low. I would say stick with that program man, it sounds like you're a shoe in if you have half a brain and can interview well...

Thanks for the replies everyone. The requirements have actually increased. You need to maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA and you need at least a 26 MCAT score. As for why I want to transfer out, it is because I don't like the college (at all) and the teachers aren't so great (only one science professor for each subject)...you don't get such a great education.
