I have an interview for the PsyD program at the Adler School of Professional Psychology coming up. From what the admissions counselor said, it is going to be a 1:1 interview with a member of the faculty and then a tour and info session. She also said there will be a writing sample session.
Has anyone ever interviewed there before? How did it go? What is the writing sample like?

Thanks

Hello,

I interviewed at Adler for Fall 2008 admission. Everything you mentioned is pretty spot-on, but there was also a Q&A session with current students and a lunch portion where you have the opportunity to speak to faculty members about the various programs and concentrations they have.

I can't remember the exact questions that were on the writing sample, but you got to choose among a group of questions. They basically asked for your opinion on topics that relate to social awareness and multiculturalism. It's pretty straight-forward, and I think they are mostly looking to see if you are able to write clearly and coherently.

I would suggest to try and distinguish yourself because you will be in a room that has about 30 other applicants. Show enthusiasm and ask questions! Also, it should go without saying that you should always dress professionally. There was a girl that interviewed in fishnet stockings, pumps, and a black mini-skirt. I was appalled.

Good luck!

Thanks so much. I am relieved that there is not a group interview. I am okay with asking questions, but I attended one group interview at Adelphi, and everyone was competing to talk. This was bad for me because I tend to be on the polite side and whenever I wanted to say something, someone else spoke.

I am planning on wearing a suite. Do you remember how long the 1:1 interview is? I am a little nervous! Also, where did you end up going to school?

Thanks again!

The one-to-one interview is around 45 minutes. Good luck!

Rocco - when did you interview? Did you get in? Maybe the fishnet girl was just coming from the bar?! LOL

OP: wear a suit. I also interviewed there and there will be people dressed, as Rocco pointed out, in a way that makes you wonder what they were thinking. Rocco was point-on about how the day will go. Faculty is at the lunch and very interested in telling you about their programs.

There was a girl at my lunch table who told the admissions counselor that at her undergraduate university it was better to have a TA than a prof because the TA "understood that we had more than just this one class." Yes, she said that. And she went on to elaborate on the prof who assigned last minute assignments that "were 700 pages long, no not really, but long,". Seriously. I couldn't even look at her anymore.😳

since it sounds like students dress more casual, will I be overdressed if I wear a suit? Also, do you remember what you were asked at the interview? I hear horror stories about curve balls at interviews, so want to make sure I am prepared? Did you get into the school? I am also applying to the chicago school and have an interview coming up there too.

Hey Clinic Girl, I interviewed last February though I can't remember the exact date. Yes I got in, but I decided to go with another program even though I thought that Adler had a solid program. There were some people I thought were very intelligent and highly qualified, but there were some that...well...who knows!

Greensky-- I know that some places recommend not showing up in a suit to your interview, but I would highly recommend it for your Chicago School and Adler interviews. Both the Chicago school interview and Adler interview were similar. I don't remember either school asking curveball questions in my one-on-one interviews, they were both pretty straight forward.
