I cut and paste this from a response that I made some time back in the Pharmacy Student Forum:
Look on the website in the prospective student section, then the current student section. If that fails, look inthe on-line handbook if they have one. Lastly boolean search the term acedemic deferment on their website. Older and smaller schools may not have this option. But a dean denying the deferemnt may be a illegal(an unethical) bluff. In either case, discover as much about the deferment policy as posibble before you conversation with the school.
Currently on deferrment
Hey. I am currently on deferment, but each school has there own policy and are able to use their discretion when the policy is spoken and not published. For example:
In 2004 I was accepted into South University College of Pharmacy. I required emergency spinal surgery in July, so informed the school. The school gave me the OK, promised deferment and later reneged on the whole thing. I was asked to re-apply and pay the application fee.
GPA-3.75
PCAT-94%-Jan 2004
BS-in Biology
In 2007 accepted Early Admission to "A southern University with two campuses and inclination to the color orange". Was later diagnosed with a medical condition that took away my focus. Their deferment policy, however was in writing in the on-line pdf handbook in the admission policy section. That was critical. No questions asked, will start school in fall 2009. The issue of it being in writing was important. And when you request a deferment keep a hard copy of the response. That is more for security and peace of mind.
Good Luck and look on-line, then call
