I always suspected that the admissions departments at medical schools know something about the applicants. I just recently found out that, come January, a list is distributed that shows where students are holding positions in next year's class.

I think that does give the schools an advantage regarding their applicants and to whom they choose to give acceptances. For example, an expensive private school may not offer a position to an applicant if that applicant is in a much less expensive school.

Thoughts?😳

In January, I believe they can only see that if they've accepted you...

A friend of mine recently interviewed, and one of the interviewers said he saw that my friend had an acceptance at another school...which he did. Can LizzyM comment on this?

I'm pretty sure this information is available to schools on May 15th.

The official dates at which who can see what are listed on one of the amcas information pages, but I don't recall where exactly it is....

At a recent interview, the dean of admissions made a comment about being able to see where we've been accepted in February. 😕

I know schools are informed on May 15 because by then you can only hold an acceptance to 1 school. I had never heard of this January thing.

As for a school saying, he's accepted to X, we shouldn't bother offering him a spot, I doubt it matters. I think it's fair to say at the end of the app season, there are always individuals on the wait list for every school in the country. Even if the guy says no, then the school has another 100 to chose from. And who knows how people chose their schools. To some, money is very important. But I know several that have mom and dad paying. I doubt those people care how much tuition is. A couple people at my school turned down the state school to go to a private school that's 25k more a year because the private school is in the city, and the state is in a rural-ish area. And lots of big expensive schools offer scholarships. Case Western still lists a tuition, yet all of it's students get a free ride. Also, if one school is near the family, it probably will win over a school across the country.

Also, if everyone at case got a free ride, I wouldn't owe the government this much money... Only CCLCM students and some merit scholarship recipients in the University Program get free rides. This isn't to say that I didn't get any free money, but rather that whoever told you Case was free was a very wishful thinker.

And the admissions director, at a respected medical school said "We know where you are holding."

That means that they know if you have paid to reserve a seat for next years class at some school.

Myuu, I looked at the link and wasn't smart enough to parse all of those rules. Help me out. Did you see anything on that page pertaining to my point?

I have a hard time believing that the director was not being truthful.

Schools know how many seats/spots you hold after feb 2nd. Amcas provides schools the list.
However, only schools that have accepted you have access to the list. In late march (or ealy may?) they know whichschools have accepted you. Again, this only pertains to schools that have offered u a spot.

This is legit info from an AMCAS representative with whom i spoke.

Interesting.

I will definitely do some more research on this point. I'd love to hear others chime in who were present when I heard this information.

I think it would be an advantage to be accepted already...it proves you want to go to the school otherwise you would of likely already withdrawn your application.

At Michigan they told us that if we're accepted, on some date in March (I think the 15th) they can see what other schools we have been accepted to, and they use that information to figure out who to give scholarships to, etc. I would assume this is true of all schools.

+1. I heard the same thing. Its March when schools that accepted you can see the other schools that you are holding an acceptance at.

Michigan staff told us they can see other acceptances in March.

Will most schools have informed us of the financial aid package they are rewarding us yet? I was planning on holding all of my acceptances until I could figure out which one gave the best package since finances will play a pretty important factor in my ultimate decision 🙁

I think most schools let you know between March and April, depending on when you get your FAFSA in. That said, schools like WashU don't hand out their merit scholarships until May, which is really late!

lol, it's funny that you're thinking the exact same way I am. Although I'm probably going to withdraw from 3-4 schools after winter break where I'm definitely not going to attend simply as a courtesy and to simplify things down the line.

Hmmm...May would be really late to find out about merit scholarships so I hope most schools will let us know earlier than that. I'd hate to have to make my decisions without that important piece of information. Not that I am expecting to get any, but if nothing else this med school process has shown itself to be quite random at times so you never know. I was also thinking about withdrawing from some of the schools where I am definitely not going to attend, but that will have to wait until I get through this crazy finals period first! 😳

This was actually the whole reason they were talking to us about being able to see other acceptances. Michigan waits until they see what other acceptances you're holding to determine how much money they need to offer you to entice you to come. They tell you sometime in late March about financial aid packages I believe. I can only imagine other schools do the same thing.

Entice huh? I definitely like the sound of that! 😛

That's essentially what they said... it's good news if you've got an acceptance to another top program, but if Michigan's your only acceptance you probably can't really count on too much in terms of merit scholarships. Could be great depending on what side of the coin your on.

Acceptances are not "given", they are earned. The next thing that you need to remember is that we don't care where you have been accepted and do not ask for this information. The more expensive private schools may want to make sure that you can qualify for enough financial aid/loans to cover tuition thus, may ask for a credit review but other than that, where you have been accepted does not figure into acceptance one way or the other.

After May 15th, no student may hold more than one acceptance. They may hold an acceptance and several waitlists but only one acceptance. This means that you need to make up your mind (narrow down to one) as soon as you can before that date or you lose all of your acceptances. It also means that those on the waitlists will see some movement after that date.

The January thing is actually a non-issue in terms of you getting in or not getting in. Either you meet our criteria or you don't. If you don't, you won't get in regardless of how many other schools have accepted you.

from one of the deans of admissions at a school I interviewed at:

after accepting you, and after a certain date (that i can't remember, maybe may, but I might be wrong), they CAN see where else you have been accepted. BUT, they mainly use this to determine if they should start offering acceptances to the wait list. he said that, over the years, they get a good idea of who will ultimately pick their school when looking at the other places applicants have acceptances.

hope that helps 🙂

At one of the med schools that I interviewed at, the dean said that they pull up all other acceptances from all of the students that they have accepted to make sure that they are not holding other acceptances after a certain point.

She said that they'd had problems in the past with students pulling out up until a couple of weeks before class, forcing them to pull people off of the waitlist right before class starts. She said that they at a certain time of year, they ask students holding other acceptances to make a decision out of courtesy.
