Anyone know how DO schools typically feel about people in grad programs? Do they require you to complete it before admitting you?

I don't think any schools woudl require to complete any grad program unless they first reject you and enroll you in their grad program to show them you can make the grades. I would email the schools and check though as most of them are really good and getting back to you.

7 schools (DO and MD) admitted me while I was still in my MPH program. I ended up finishing my degree but it really never was a major concern unless your doing a Phd or something where the school put a lot of time and effort into your progress....then you need an OK from your department head saying they know you are looking into a professional school. Its common because many people get into a PhD program beating out many others and then drop the school and thier research for medical school leaving that school high and dry.

Many of allopathic schools require you to finish your graduate degree. Their acceptance is conditional that one finishes the degree prior to matriculation. They will be willing to defer the admissions. I haven't heard if this is true with Osteopathic schools though.

I don't think any really care. Unless it is a public school and/or have any affiliation to the grad school. I think they want to fill the classes with qualified people... UNLESS.. they admit you based on your future goals.. including the use of your graduate degree. If you say you want to be a DO scientist for example...

HI. i don't know about DO schools, but i can tell you from experience last year that MD schools, atleast the ones I applied to, do NOT look favorably upon people who are in PhD program, unless you will have finished by the time u would enter med school. I am not saying every school is like this, but it does make sense. Even though I had met with important people from my PhD program, even the Dean of the school knew, the MD schools battered me with questions and seemed to not believe me when I explained that people at my program knew. I even had a letter of rec from my thesis advisor! I eventually made the decision to leave my program this year, because I knew what I wanted, and that was medical school. So, it depends what type of grad program, how much time you have left, etc... Just be sure you have good reasons for wanting to leave the grad program and do med school...and be able to express that to med schools.

Last year I was in a MS in bio program and this year I'm in med school. Noone seemed to have a problem with it. I just made sure that everyone was in the loop as to what I was planning to do. ie I told my graduate advisor that I was applying to med school and would be gone if I was accepted. He wrote me a "release letter" that I gave to all the schools. Basically stating that he knew of my plans all along and I wasn't trying to play either side.

Interesting. I am considering taking the GRE and applying to the PhD psych program here if I'm not admitted this cycle. Obviously, however, I do not want to be unable to matriculate into med school if accepted second cycle.

Really, I haven't completely decided if I want to put up with even more school that may not be necessary. My grades aren't horrible or anything, so I may just work during the between time.

Not knowing anything blows. 🙁
