Greetings:

It has come to my attention that not all residents are members of the AAPMR and that not all residency programs pay the $75 per year for each resident to be a member.

I am looking to pair up successful attendings to orphaned residents. For only $75/yr or 21cents per day, you can adopt a PGY2-PGY4 resident.

I think this is an excellent way to become an active mentor.

First resident to request membership to AAPMR and is in an accredited program will be adopted by me. If you come to the AAPMR annual meeting in Atlanta in November 2012, you will get a tour of the city and a fine meal away from the hotel.

For the folks who have gotten a good carreer from PMR and want to give back, post here and state that you too will support a resident.

Sincerely,

Steven M. Lobel, MD

PS: This post was penned while I was on a membership committee conference call and the pace of progress to get things done through official channels is unsatisfactory for my likings.

I'd say me but I'm hoping to go to ASRA in November and will be a PGY-5 (no love for the fellows???). I'll end up paying the $75 myself, it's important enough to me to remain a member of my specialty academy during my fellowship year.

I am going into my PGY1 year, got an email from aapm&r, am I eligible to join this year?? I would love to be sponsored by you Steve!

Steve,

This is a great idea, but only if it incorporates some element of public shaming for the programs. The Physiatrist should publish a list of names of sponsors, residents, and their affiliated stingy programs. If you can guarantee me this, then sign me up!

I also think you should do a parody-type video with sappy music and video of PM&R residents slaving away writing admit orders/paper work on inpatients units. Then you can walk in front of the camera and say, "Yes, for just pennies per day you can make a difference in the lives of these neglected residents? Won't you please help? Won't you give today?"

Moreover, we should make it competitive. I'll double the number you sponsor and I'll get DP to double it too.

"Won't you please, please, PLEASE help? These residents are dying (of boredom) and your sponsorship can make a difference in their lives TODAY!"

The data on programs that pay for their residents is confidential and known to the membership committee. But if a resident from every program wrote in to tell us if their program paid for their membership, we could reproduce the data.

I'll match 2 adoptions. Now we have 5 more residents to adopt. I've got the first one.

DocTalk12 has been adopted. He will submit PDF to AAPMR for associate membership and I'm paying his membership for his PGY1 year.

Who is next?

😍

Find me a pet, err, I mean resident to adopt.

Will they be house-broken, or do I have to train them?

I am house-broken but cant speak for everyone else!!
Its really such a great feeling to join AAPM&R, especially as it results from being active here SDN. Kudos to Steve for initiating this!

Would love to be sponsored by someone. I'm in the same boat as DocTalk - going to start prelim med and then off to my PM&R program.

Thanks in advance!

PM Russo or Pmr4msk. Download and complete resident application from www.aapmr.org

Email the complete form to you step-attending and they can fax it to Aapmr with the payment.

hello all, i also am relatively new.. just finishing up intern year and would love to get adopted..

PM one of thu guys above and download the form at aapmr. Get email when you PM and send the completed form to the adopter. They can fax it into aapmr with the fee.

November in ATL: I'm hosting a party for the adopter/adoptees.

Calling all Pgy1's and all 2-4's whose programs don't fund your spots. We cannot adopt you unless we know who you are. Chime in or pm me. Also looking for more Rehab sugardaddies to adopt a resident.

I'll throw a big party in Atl at the academy meeting for the folks willing to support my intrusion into making the aapmr a bigger friendlier and more powerful place.

Good idea. I'm in. Send me a destitute resident...

We have a sweet young PGY-3 up for adoption from the Baltimore area. If anyone wishes to adopt, please post her ASAP. She will go fast.

now that I'm on the Practice Resourses committee,I should probably adopt someone. Send me the info.

I'm awaiting her email with the application as a PDF.
I will PM you kind folks with her app and then you can send in the $75 resident fee to the academy via check or CC.

I think we are taking care of our own. And thumbing our noses at the folks in academia who feel $75 per resident is just not worth having a PMR home.

Application ready to go. First to PM me can adopt ($75 to AAPMR via check or CC).

I'll send the application form via PDF to your email. You send in funds and sign off as proposer.

Something good is happening here. PMR is taking care of its own.

It has been my experience that state programs rarely pay for resident memberships, while those associated with private institutions do.

Does that jibe with the stats, Steve?

I trained at Baylor/UT-Houston. We paid for our own memberships. But that was a LONG time ago.

We've got a new puppy up for adoption. Comes with all her papers and shots. Ready to go.
Just need someone to pay the adoption fee and sponsor on the application with the AAPMR.

No spay/neuter requirements for residents. 😀

Who is ready to mentor and adopt?
