“Advanced” Birth Centers

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So at my birthing center they have 4 units of O negative and more 5 minutes away.
But is it really five minutes away? As in someone running there or driving there? And then getting there and to blood bank and back? That’s at least 10 minutes if it’s five minutes one way.

Someone on phone has to call and place the order. You can’t just call a massive transfusion protocol overhead from the birthing center. Or can you? Is it one and the same hospital with an outreach or totally separate?

And what about all available hands? When a code blue happens who’s available to help at a birthing center besides the deer in headlights OB nurses? The surgeons are tied up. No colleagues to help run the level one of you are trying to place any kind of line, hang fluids, nothing. A CRNA? At least? Someone who knows resuscitation?

Tell us more please.

It's hard to believe more blood is 5 minutes away, unless we're talking some kind of hypothetical gravity or wormhole distorted surgeon-time ("this case will take five minutes").

5 minutes is optimistic for emergency release blood IN the hospital with the blood bank.
