Anyone know if you have to sign a contract to be in a specialty program or GPR/AEGD program? What happens if you drop out a couple of months before the program starts?

You do sign a contract for and AEGD/GPR that they send to you shortly after the match day with a "desired" reply date soon afterwards. If you decide afterwards that you want to back out, some programs will let you go no problems, others won't 😱 Afterall, the program gets ALOT of money from the federal government (roughly $125,000 last time I checked) to educate and pay you each and every residency year, and many of these programs have the full amount of money for a full complement of residents factored into their yearly budgets.

In my 2nd year of residency, the person who I was going to be originally co-chief resident with backed out about 1 month after signing the contract for the 2nd year(he got a job offer he just couldn't refuse). The residency program went after him legally to make him stay, and it wasn't until he was able to find another person that the program deemed suitable to fill his place that the legal matters were dropped 😱 :scared:

In general, once you sign on the dotted line, its often quite difficult to get out until that contractual time is up
