I am just wondering what advantages/disadvantages there might be of going to a brand new program. I interviewed with a program that is just starting this year. I really liked the program and everyone I met. I am just wondering what problems i might face if i chose to go there since they are brand new. Any one have any insight?

Advantages:
  1. It will be less competitive to get in, as it has no track record.
  2. They are unlikely to terrorize you, or they won't recruit anyone next year.
  3. You will likely have much input into how the program runs, help develop the curriculum, etc.
Disadvantages:
  1. It's likely there will be bumps along the way. Expect some rotations to not work well.
  2. No name recognition, for jobs or fellowships.
  3. New PD, may not know what they're doing.
  4. As a new PGY-1, you won't have any PGY-2/3's to oversee you, nor to act as role models.

Thanks for your help programdirector. I really appreciate it. This program is affiliated with a University, and has trained residents before who rotated there, however this is the first year they are a "stand alone" program. I am interested in fellowship, and this is my big concern about going there... again thank you for your valuable imput!
