Advice about going into GS

I'll second SteadyEddy's post. I'm a GS intern as well and have wanted to do this since high school. I'm living a dream. But indeed there are many days when I ask myself why I chose this field. The sacrifice is ENORMOUS. I miss my wife terribly. She has sacrificed enormously as well, obviously.

If you're not 100% committed to surgery, I'd look hard at derm, IR, cardiology and other highly procedure-oriented specialties first.

Very best of luck to you. Feel free to IM me with any questions.

As an intern in general surgery, I would probably say go into something else if you don't love this stuff. I have been in love with the field since my 3rd year of medical school, yet there are still some days that I wonder why the hell I chose this field (only for a few seconds though...as an opportunity to put in a chest tube or do a colostomy reversal reminds me of how cool this stuff is). It is the desire and love for the field that keep me going. Again just my opinion though. I wish the best in finding a passion for whatever field you choose.

Well, I'm just a FIRST year and I'm also wondering about whether GS is right for me. I've scrubbed in on a few procedures and I absolutely loved it, even though all my incompetant self can do right now is retract, hoover and staple.

Any advice for pre-clinical students with an interest in GS? Should I try to get myself more time in the OR, or should I just forget it until 3rd year? Quite frankly, the limited OR slots I can get so far are the high point of the hell known as first year...
