Hi guys, so I will be graduating with my B.A. in psychology by the end of this year. I plan on applying to various post-bac programs. I wanted to get advice about my stats and exactly how competitive these programs are.

I am currently at a 3.65 GPA, I am involved in two research groups (one clinical, the other more based on cog. science/education) and also an intern at the Medical Center. I plan on taking the GRE to represent my performance on exams. (what percentile/range do you guys think I should aim for?)

Do you guys think I have a chance of getting accepted into a good program? Preferably somewhere in CA

Also, would you recommend applying for Spring, summer, or fall semester/quarters?

Thanks in advance!!!

I'm no expert, but it sounds like you are an excellent candidate for any program. Don't bother with the GRE; lots of post-bacc programs ask for your SAT scores instead.

Is this for medical school? Your GPA seems fine for regular admissions, just need to knock out the MCAT. Maybe take upper level sciences this year.

As for your question, most programs allow you to apply in spring and you seem like a solid candidate for almost any program. Just not sure if you're looking for SMP or regular Post-Bacc.

If you have not taken most of your pre-reqs yet, you definitely need some sort of postbac. Scripps is in CA, and is one of the best postbac programs in the nation.

You sound like a reasonably solid candidate from the surface at least... don't be afraid to e-mail or call the programs themselves for advice. They are usually very helpful.

When you wish to start depends on how long the program is and when you will graduate in relation to the Med application process. I don't know about the CA schools but here in Colorado, CU Boulder has an 18 month career changer program, which starts in the summer (with a killer Chem sequence).

Check individual program websites... they may or may not put up recommended or average GRE scores... usually there is kind of a sliding scale there. What they are really looking for is to predict your academic success in the sciences, so coming from a major like psychology, they will likely look for a stronger quantitative score. Be sure you spend enough time focused on that preparation.

Best of luck 🙂

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!!

I actually just took the GRE last week. I figured it would be a better representation of what I am capable of doing now compared to my SAT scores.

@darkjedi -- i heard a lot of great things about this program! i intend on finding out some more information

@BegisBioMedMS -- just reviewed the curriculum, definitely adding it to the list of schools i'm applying to
