if i study for the MCAT my freshmen year in college but don't take any tests, just kinda get the idea be familiar with it. i'll study on weekdayz when i am done with HW And other stuff. Do you think that that is wayyyyyy to early, cause i don't want to be bored at the end before the test cause i did that for SAT. I studied for a yr and the last 4 weeks i couldn't even look at a book. but i don't know the SAt had english and math but the MCAT has a lot more topics. What do you think?

study for the mcat your freshman year????

dude chill cause that is a bit too early. i think the majority of people on sdn and premeds in general study their jr year. its kinda of a waste trying to study for the mcat without even taking your intro science classes and english classes in college.

I don't think it would be especially helpful to do this. First of all, the MCAT is heavily dependent (basically every section but Verbal Reasoning) on the material you learn in your prerequisites - bio, gen chem, orgo, and physics. So unless you've had these courses, it would be very difficult to get any valuable studying done. You might derive some benefit from using an MCAT review text in parallel with a particular course so you'll know the important concepts that will show up again on the MCAT. You can also begin honing your verbal and critical reading skills by reading publications like The New York Times, The Economist, etc.

Other than that, any formal studying at this stage would be pointless, in my opinion.

You won't learn all the subjects needed for the MCAT until probably the end of sophomore year, that is unless you have tons of AP credits.

Take it easy. You'll have time to worry about it later. Besides, an all-out effort closer to the MCAT is probably more effective than a half-way effort lasting two years.

Just chill out and have a beer (or have an older friend buy it for you). Start worrying about MCAT in your junior year.

Sure, there's nothing wrong with spending your freshman year studying for the MCAT a full two years before you're probably going to take it. Except for your classmates always snatching your pocket-protector and giving your nerdy arse atomic wedgies on a daily basis. 👍

Seriously though, go make friends, have a few drinks and enjoy college life your freshman year. The MCAT is not that hard. You won't need two years to study for it.

I think if you will be able to start studying for the MCAT now then you have waaaaaaaaaaay too much time on your hands. How about you use all that free time to work on building up your EC's??

Relax, it isn't THAT bad. 🙂

Don't place all the emphasis on the MCAT, also use time to keep up your GPA, do EC's, and just simply get the most out of the college experience.

I think the best way to prepare for MCAT is to take upper division science classes where they ask you to read scientific papers and design experiments, etc. At least for me, those classes prepared me better than a MCAT prep course.

Have you started to take a look at some of the passages? I thought they were a lot of fun because you have to constantly be thinking to put the puzzle together. I only studied for 2 months but I think if you looked at it on and off for a year or two it would still be interesting. Don't time yourself until fairly close to the test date. That way there's no pressure. The other thing you could do is just read the verbal passages without answering the questions. The topics are usually quite facinating. It's kind of like reading a magazine with very short articles...I like them because I think I have a pretty short attention span when it comes to super long articles. Good luck.

If you want to prepare for the MCAT so early, your best bet I think is with verbal reasoning. Read a lot on different subjects such as science, philosophy, etc, and more importantly read actively. Question the assumptions and conclusions the author is stating. It's too easy to be passive and accept what is written. The MCAT VR section places a high value on these skills. You can learn the science content later.
