Hello everyone, I'm an oms1 that is really interested in psych and was wondering what else I should do to secure a research position. I have emailed 2 PDs near where I live and both said they will let me know if something comes up. I'm looking to do a poster or a presentation, I have too many bills to do a full project over the summer so I'll be trying to work to pay those.

I have experience as a nurses aide before medical school and had psychiatric patients so I at least have that going.

I'm guessing you mean for the summer? I think this is going to be hard. Generally these sort of brief experiences are done internal to your school, but I don't think a lot of DO schools are attached to major research institutions. I know some are, but I'm thinking since you're emailing external program directors...yours might not be. I'm not sure how many outside universities will be too invested in getting you all setup for a little over 2 months of work. Just getting you on an IRB application is a whole bunch of effort. The good news is that this is not required and it's rather rare actually in psych applicants.

Thanks I just want to stay competitive. My school is affiliated with a residency program but I'm kind of worried because I know at least one person that has family connections in psych and don't want to not match in the future. Maybe if getting a project fails I can try to get employment on a psych unit over the summer

Try getting connected with AACAP and finding a funded project and mentor through the awards they offer.
I'll try giving them a call. If a project was available that was funded I would imagine the pds I emailed would reach out hopefully. Only 72% of the DOs that applied this cycle matched so I'm kind of worried about that.

Just wanted to say that while this is technically true if you just do the raw math, NRMP’s Advance Data Tables and Main Match Reports can’t distinguish between applicants who applied to psych as a backup and applicants for whom psych was a top choice— we have to wait for the NRMP Charting Outcomes in the Match data to come out this summer to know the real %

That is true I wondered how many people may have figured out they weren't competitive for the specialty they wanted and applied to psych without showing any interest previously

Update: DO senior match rate by preferred specialty in psychiatry was 78% in 2023 (down from 87% in 2022). So, not as scary as 72% but not a comfort either…
