Ok so heres the story..I have completed my Residency in a competitive program but my PGY1 (from another program) was not approved so I have to repeat it! during this time my steps lapsed so I gave all of them again and passed (whew), I did not match and scramble was a headache..all the horror stories are true! All I need to do is get in any preliminary surgery or Transitional Medicine/ER/Paeds/Family Practice/medicine program and do the PGYY1. you can imagine even with my residency experience I did not get in the scramble. Most of the programs require one to be not more than 3 to 5 yrs out of med school.

So I guess at this point I dont know what to do to get in a PGY1 for next year I would appreciate any suggestions. I am desperate!

Your program should be able to help you out at the institution where you are. And if you will qualify with doing FP I, then you're in a good position.

I wouldn't sweat it too much and start knocking on doors and see who will listen to help you. Explain your case, explain what needs to be done and see if there will be any allowances. Quite possible that IM could take you on as a pre-lim.

You applied broadly to various fields (prelim Medicine/Surgery, transitional year, Medicine, FP) and didn't match?

But I thought most (all?) advanced programs require proof of satisfactory completion of PGY 1 year before you start with them.😕

well I didnt get the credit..its a crappy situation..so close yet so far! any way any advice would be appreciated..

Out of curiousity, why would you have to retake your steps? They lapse if you don't complete them within 7 years; after you complete Step 3, aren't they permanent?

To summarise..I didnt give my step 3 in the 7 yrs so it lapsed and I had to give all 3 again as I had to go back to my home country after Residency (J-1)..Came back now on a green card.and yes I did get into PGY-2 after- (so I thought ) completion of PGY-1-need to do it again- any advice?

There's always find a resident from the AAMC. You might have a bit of trouble because you won't be able to get any funding (matched into a 3 year residency; therefore, only 3 years of funding... did 4, now have to do another year..) but there are positions open and with a little luck, you might be in business...

This sounds like a very unusual situation. It would almost seem like your residency program would have to supply you with an internship opportunity so that they can "make up" for their mistake. Something fell through the cracks and I would think that they need to take responsibility for accepting you into their program and training you.

Just one of those instances where you get to be in the bad books of the pd for minor issues and also being an fmg in my opinion makes a difference where you have to work twice as hard just to prove yourself. One instance where I had to give a presentation of 18 admissions and couldn't remember the details of all the patients in my cardiology rotation. It was a killer night..I'm just giving you an example ..nothing major ...someone has suggested filing a petition for retroactive reevaluation....maybe there's a chance to get credit. Any insight.

You need to go to your anesthesia program and grovel (was your prelim year @the same place?) and see if there are any faculty members who know anyone, anywhere, who needs an intern for next year. You just need to suck it up and finish a year ANYWHERE. This is a very bizarre situation to be in. I think it has to be someone more than just your intern year PD who didn't like you...or your anesthesia program is just very unhelpful. It seems if they liked you they'd have done something to help you. To get a "real" anesthesia job I would think you'll have to provide documentation of your internship and residency completion certificates...of course being board certified is optimal but there might be a few jobs you could get without it. Anything but moonlighting I would think is going to be out until you get documentation of an intern year completed...
I would think that some program somewhere will get desperate for an intern who has some skills...I mean you already completed an entire residency, right? I would look on Open Spots, all those web sites, AAMC, etc. I think in this situation networking is equally important. Can you go back to your med school (if not a foreign school) and see if they can help you out, or know of any internship spots that may open up?

You answer Buzz Me's question nine months after s/he asked it ... without any indication of what (if anything) has happened in the intervening time?? My troll meter just went into the red zone.

Well I'm not trolling.Since I didn't get into a pgy1 I took the option of going into a fellowship so I wouldn't waste a year..But again the question of the intern year still arises....

What about the states that take step 3 in 10 years? i didn't pass in 7 years but made the 10 year mark. would I end up having to retake my steps if i get residency?

Agree with the above advice. You need to speak with your Anesthesia PD. Hopefully they will be able to help get you a PGY-1, perhaps at that same institution.
