Hello Everyone!
I'm 23 years old and I've recently graduated with a B.S. in pharmacology with a 3.5 G.P.A in the state of New York in 2014. I been in academic research for 3 years now and planning on going into my 4th year (2016).
I worked in a lab in 3 NY institutions (Stony Brook, Hunter, and currently NYUMC) with work ranging from biochemistry (HPLC/LCMS) to cell signaling and biology (cell culture, transformations, IHC and etc), but unfortunately, no publications (unlucky with science??).
I love bench work though some people might see it as monotonous and unrewarding (if you are unlucky with science as I am), but I do not have the drive or ambition to become a leader in scientific research (Ph.D.). Not yet, anyway at least.
Stating that, I was thinking about becoming a CLS/MT in the city by applying for the 10-13 month AC (advanced certificate) program in Medical laboratory technology at CUNY Hunter that would allow me to sit for the NY CLT licensure exam (CUNY Hunter is not accredited by NAACLS, but it would be fine if I were to only seek employment in NY).
With a middle class salary (currently earning 27K as a tech, so w/e I researched CLS/MT personnel make in the city is middle class to me), experience matches my currently criteria and a some clinical research techniques as well, I think a CLS would be a good fit for me. I also believe that it would be a good experience to have if I decide to apply for other medical professions in the future as well.
I know there are specializations (blood bank, chemistry, microbio and etc), but what do you guys think? Will my bench work experience help me find an occupation in the city? Will CLS even BE a good fit for me? Which specialization is most favorable at this time? Any information of who/what/when/why/how about being a CLS/MT in NY is greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone!
