Hi everyone! (sorry if this is not the right place to post)

I’m a current sophomore at a liberal arts college (baby Ivy, one of seven sisters) and considering applying to the FlexMed program at Icahn School of Medicine. I know it’s competitive and a bit unconventional, so I’d love advice from anyone who’s applied, been accepted, or knows the program well.

Here’s a general overview of my profile combining my highschool and college ecs (by the time of application around Jan):
  • Clinical Experience: ~300 hours volunteering at a hospital, ~80 hours shadowing/medical volunteer at a primary care practice, ~30 hours shadowing an oncologist, and ~30 hours with radiologists (potentially more)
  • Advocacy/Service: ~100 hours with a national cancer advocacy group, plus started a health section in a global faith-based journal (~100 hours), founded health club at school + hosted blood drives and raised $20K through donations
  • Leadership: Founded a mentorship program for first-gen/low-income students (~200 hours), led a student first-year group (~100 hours), and am a core part of an org connected to supporting a medical center in Haiti (~100 hours), founded and led a faith-based organization providing design resources/education for teenagers globally, was head residential advisor at boarding school
  • Research: ~300 hours in a medical school research lab (also cancer research with a professor in the spring)
  • Academics: 1420 SAT, 11 AP exams (majority were self-studied, I helped build our online AP curriculum) (all 9 5s, 2 4s), and I’ve received several academic scholarships, grants, and campus awards. High School GPA: 4.2 / College GPA: 3.92
  • Interests: Strong focus on public health, health communication, faith-based service, and possibly pursuing a humanities minor and study abroad.
  • Background: First-gen/low-income with a real drive to use medicine to address structural inequalities and global health challenges.
I see FlexMed as a way to grow outside the traditional pre-med track but I know the admissions bar is really high...and money isn't easy to come buy...So I’d love to ask:
  • Do you think this is a competitive profile for FlexMed?
  • What kind of "flex" factor do they actually want to see?
  • Any essay/interview tips from past applicants?
  • Would you say it’s worth applying in my case?
