Advice on if I should apply DO

It's no great shame to go to DO school. It's also no great shame to get rejected on all MD apps the first time around. If time and cost are not a major issue for you, and you do not have any crazy disciplinary actions or personality "quirks," then I would recommend applying M.D. Your numbers give you a fighting chance.

In reading the threads within the past few months, some posters that applied to both MD and DO have a hard find committing to the DO program once they have been waitlisted/rejected from the MD route.

There is no judgement on my part - if you did not get into an MD program and got into a DO program, would you really go?

If you got into a DO program and no MD programs, would you reapply again? Assuming you get into a DO program without the intention of going, you probably burned your DO bridge and there is no guarantee if you applied again to DO programs you would get in.

Applying to medical school is a time exhaustive, stressful, and costly process. You should want to do this only once and with the best possible application.

There are no "safety schools" when applying to medical school. There is a probability you might get into a certain school/program, but no guarantee. Read the re-applicant forums - there are tons of people with better stats than me that didn't get into either an MD or DO program.

Again, I am not judging the merits of going into either program. People need to stop approaching certain schools and DO programs as "safeties." There is no guarantee for admission. Every cycle the stats for MD and DO programs are increasing. Approach this cycle as your only cycle, or wait to apply until you have a stronger application.

Best of luck, OP.

Seems like you don't actually want to be a DO.

Also, 4.0 SMP and 514 MCAT are, in the words of the great @Goro, nothing to sneeze at.

Thanks a lot for your advice everyone. I get what you're saying, and I think I'll be sticking to just MD this cycle. I am pretty sure even if accepted to a DO school I would try again. I appreciate all your input and thanks again.

I suggest trying a cycle with MD schools only.

IF you get shut out, then MD + DO next cycle.
Can i just point out that I gave that advice FURst?! Harharh. cat , fur, get it?

I'd at least apply DO to Rowan. In state tuition. If you decide in October to add DO schools because you get no MD love, good DO schools like Rowan and the well established schools will be more competitive. So either go all in MD only for one cycle or add the good DO schools now before it's too late. You worked too hard at the MCAT and your SMP to end up at a LECOM branch campus because you applied late.

If you think there is even a change that you would turn down DO if it was your only offer (and it sounds like there's more than just a chance), then you should not apply DO. As has been previously mentioned, turning down a DO acceptance is extremely likely to prevent you from getting a DO acceptance again from any DO school should you decide to apply to DO schools again in a later cycle.
