Hey y'all! I plan on applying this summer for vet school and I just took the gre for the first time and it's not high at all. I didn't study very much so it's my fault I still have time to retake it but gosh I'd rather not. So I wanted to see what y'all thought was best. My current gpa is a 4.0 and I've worked at a vet for a couple years so I have a lot of vet experience and I also have some other shadowing hours and a good bit of volunteer hours but my verbal and quant scores are 149 each and I'm not sure on the writing yet. So is it worth it to take it again or not

You can get in with those scores, but not necessarily at highly competitive schools. Also remember some schools do not even consider GRE anymore. If you are eyeballing a school like Davis, I would retake it and do an organized study program

As Coffee has mentioned, you can get in with those scores (I did and my score was a bit lower than yours), but I would make sure that other areas of you application are strong. Schools try a holistic overview of applications, but some do favor GRE scores more than others. There are other threads that mention which schools don't emphasize the GRE as much and you should analyze your application or have someone critique you to see what areas you could improve in.

Do you know what schools are not considering or requiring the GRE?

A lot of the schools publish average admitted GRE/GPA/etc. I would look at the schools you are planning to apply to to see how close you are to their average and decide whether or not it's worth it to retake. I bought the Magoosh online software, and it helped a lot!

Yeah LSU is my instate and they have an average 308 so I'm definitely below and I actually have magoosh but I didn't study that one as much, I used the Kaplan book and did well with those practice tests but those questions were not up to par compared to the actual test so I guess I need to work with magoosh. I think I'm going to take it again at the end of may.

Best of luck to you with Magoosh. A lot of people have found it to be quite helpful in raising their GRE scores. I posted links for the LSU's 2021 & 2020 class stats. Your 4.0 gpa is obviously excellent 🙂 and might outweigh lower than average GRE scores, but if you can raise it a bit that will make your application even stronger.

I use magoosh for the math tutorials, and then I bought the ETS books for the practice tests and questions. I felt the practice tests were on par with the real test, but I needed the extra help from magoosh to do better on the math.

If you decide to look for additional prep materials, Manhattan prep has excellent online courses that I highly recommend. They're expensive, but in my opinion, they're worth it.

I had a spotty history with standardized tests in the past (some good, some...not as good), and did very well on the GRE after taking one of their courses.

Good luck!

Those GRE scores could actually be much worse; I would say you still have a decent shot at getting accepted with that 298 if you have as much experience and as high of a GPA as you say. But everyone else pretty much nailed the rest of advice that you need. 🙂 Good luck if you decide to retake it, and good luck with your application process!
