Hello! I am a upcoming P1 to Pharmacy School and was wondering if any senior pharmacy students have any advice for me on how to get the most out of the education!

Also how is life after pharmacy school. Do most go into residencies and if so, which ones?

Thank you! I am looking forward to your experiences and advice 🙂.

The #1 advice is to try to get a pharmacy job as early as you can. If you can do it now, go for it. Many of the people in my graduating class who still haven't found pharmacist jobs are the ones who didn't work during school.

As far as after school, it's really a matter of personal preference. I think about 25% of our class including myself went into residency, 15 people (out of 215 or so) went into industrial fellowship, the majority took retail positions though and many are quite happy with this choice. Which residency really depends on what you want out of a program, and you'll figure that out as you progress through school.

There are lots of residencies all over the country. Look at the ASHP website and you'll find where they are, who is in charge of the programs, and what they offer.

I'd recommend joining SSHP if you are really interested to learn what all you can do to prepare.

Can you link exactly where it is on the ASHP website? Thank you! 🙂

Work in a pharmacy during school....at least during the summer if not the school year. It will better prepare you for your future plus it can give you an edge in certain things when it comes to school. Can't imagine having to memorize all of these drug side effects and MOA etc without actively using...if you work, you see it and practice it in counseling etc. I think it helps make it more solid and meaningful.

Get involved in an extracurricular. Good for resume, networking, and just fun.

This an excellent way to find out before it's too late if/that pharmacy is not the career for you. Far too many people go through school, and then find out that they found the theory interesting but the practice not to their liking, and then they're kind of stuck. It doesn't have to be retail, either; you could work at a hospital or long-term care pharmacy; LTC pharmacies supply nursing homes, jails, and other care facilities, if you didn't know.

Could you also shot them a PM so they don't have to check this thread? Or just print it out and mail it to them so they don't have to get on the computer? :meanie:

To be fair this one isn't super easy to find, as we just said it's somewhere on the ASHP site, and the OP wouldn't quite know what they're looking for.
