Hi all,
I am curious if anyone has been able to amend their study/test taking habits to work more quietly and with more control of their environment. I ask because I often get into these passive-aggressive, cat-and-mouse type interactions, which disrupts my own ability to learn and perform.

I've been told that I'm a disruptive student in class, so I stopped going to class. Maybe stop studying?

Without realizing it, I ignore people while studying and they, in turn, get my attention (coughing, clearing their throat). If I don't respond/ adapt to them, they started thinking of me as a problem.

why are they trying to get your attention? are you being loud?

I gave him points for originality. It's tough these days. As an aside, I just got back from the Wendy's drive through, looked in the bag, and there was bbq sauce instead of honey mustard. :meh:
that's a real downer since honestly cannot think of a single fast food chain with a bbq sauce i can enjoy

sounds like the idiots that click their laptops left click a hundred times during an exam instead of just touching the touchpad.

Is the person your girlfriend? If so, stop studying around her. This sounds like a funny high school sitcom. Lol.

Or who don't bring headphones to the cardio exam so the whole class can hear the friction rub that they're listening to.

Thanks for that; you owe me a new beer and a clean shirt.
😆But doesn't it sound like it though? I don't know any study buddies who try to get someone's attention by coughing or clearing their throat. Sounds perfect to be solved on an episode of Full House. OP next time just carry some cough drops or Chloraseptic spray with you.

Takeaways Ive had from this thread:
1. influence others' thoughts rather than their emotions in studying environments (proactiveness)
2. Respond to other peoples emotions with thought (responsiveness), rather than with feeling (reactiveness)

Thank you for all advice

We have someone like that in our class, and I've razzed him about it a little bit. During exams and quizzes, he taps his pen, shifts in his chair constantly, makes noises that I'm pretty sure he's not aware of. It is distracting. However, I don't expect that it will change, and eventually I can tune it out. I don't think worse of him. Honestly, I wouldn't worry much about it, OP.
