So yesterday I got rejected from the University of Rochester (pre-interview), which was my first choice. They sent me a snail mail letter saying that they rejected me but they said since I have a connection to the school (my mom went there for under-grad and grad school, and I applied and got in for undergrad but didn't go there for financial reasons) they would be able to offer me an "Advisement Interview" in order to give me ways to strengthen my application for the next cycle.

So my question is has anyone ever heard of these sorts of interviews, and if so does anyone think that by going to this interview I will have a significantly better shot of getting into Rochester for the next cycle? Has anyone attended these sorts of interviews and actually had a good result or is it more of a consolation prize?

Thanks!

You would have a better result after this interview IF (and ONLY IF) you actually apply what they tell you. Keep in mind, though, that they're probably not going to tell you everything or tell it to you in a clear/direct way. There will likely be A LOT of reading between the lines.

My alma mater used to do these sorts of interviews for rejected applicants. They also encouraged the same applicants to periodically stop by over the next year for check-ups. The admissions staff claimed that they documented these visits and took note of them when considering applications. I doubt they're worth a lot but at least they demonstrate interest.
