My class rank is in the middle but I have a lot of leadership experience at my school and good letters. I'm interested in implant placement, surgical extraction, aesthetics, some perio and peds. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for programs? Location isn't a big issue for me. I have a lot of VA programs on my list but I am worried about how competitive I will be

I always laugh when people post what they are interested in. It’s always the high dollar procedures. Like who isn’t interested in those things? I think you just need to go for it. Nobody on here can tell you what’s gonna happen. IMO apply to programs in the south or conservative areas where edentulism and smoking rates are higher. You won’t get any pedo experience at VA’s and won’t learn how to pull thirds either.

I was in the bottom 10% of my class and I applied to 6 GPR/AEGD and interviewed at 5. When I interviewed I couldnt believe how much of a waste of time they were. Now I own an amazing office with my wife (she graduated top 10%) and we are doing very well. She didnt do a GPR/AEGD and does IV sedation, implants and all the stuff that GPRs say that suck in dental students. Go out in the real world, take CE, make a living, and get the hell away from academics. Unless you are specializing, dont waste your time with an extra year of dental school. I totally understand that the unknown is scary so a GPR is a safe bet for another year but get out and work!

So you don't have to be top 50 in class rank to get into a AEGD/GPR program? Do you have to show leadership/club involvement instead?

^To get into any AEGD/GPR program, you dont have to be top 50. To get into a top VA GPR/AEGD, you should be top 10-20% at least and be well rounded. Top programs are quite competitive. But as you will learn there is a wide spectrum of programs so do your research and go for programs you want
