Besides, the majority of URM pre-meds at my undergrad get mucho red carpet treatment. We're talking free personal tutoring, course organized study sessions, sometimes different recitations with "special" TAs, worksheets and review material made that wasn't provided to the entire class, etc. I know this to be a fact as well (at least at my school) because I'm a Resident Assistant in a dorm and work with ethnic aides/URM and they have shown/told me about it.

And the problem with that is what?

If you would have cared to quote the following sentence right after that I stated that I didn't have any problem with it, "Not like I care though, I think its good and I want to see URM do well. Kudos to anyone who understands the topic at hand, regardless of how you came to understand it."

This topic is kind of like the Energizer Bunny, it keeps going and going and going...

u reading too much into it. I am saying that living as a URM with less role model to look up to and the odds already stack up against you is hard to look at the positives. I am also talking about lots of URM that are very intelligent and they don't have any1 to look up to and fall to the waste side. However, we don't care about that only when these URM take power positions.

The ghettos were full of immigrant peasants from europe.. but slowly they worked.. instead of aiming for the sky for yourself.. why not motivate your family to become a powerhouse family and then as future generations continue.. they can reach higher...

I find that a lot of URM's i know are very intelligent (75% of them at least) but they are the shining star in their family and are going to make something of themselves.. yet what about their family.. very little URM have their families become powerhouses like the Kennedy's, the Bushes, the Rockafellas, <insert big families here>...

Finally i do see powerhouse URM powerhouse families starting to form but their coming from Rap/HipHop music... but their children are becoming successful, they've got their parents employed, etc etc..

This is what I dont understand!!! If you want to cancel AA then, there has to be a certain standard set. That is, remove all the extracuricular and cancel Post-bac etc. And cancle the mcat. That is, make interviewers ask random science questions and the if one can answer 95 percent of them admit them ... I dont understand how you can believe that gettting into medical school involves many factors yet, believe AA is wrong... What about that kid(white) that gets into harvard with 4.0 and 30?? Is it not total BS that they got 30 on the mcat and yet is going to harvard!!! Why is that kid never attacked?? Let me guess because he had other stuff and, OH WAIT ****... they look at the whole application... What about the URM that gets 3.9 35 and still does not get into harvard... Should they be mad that some other person(who is over-rep) got in with 4.0 and 30?? This whole process is BS and very random... If you want to solve AA and the whole random aspect of the process set a standard...

for example,
if you ahve below 3.7 and 32 don't apply!!!

I am so tired of unqualified non-URM's assuming that an unqualified URM took their spot somewhere. My question is this: why is that a lot of non-urms (no particular ones) always assume that underrepresented minorities who are unqualified are taking their spots. I mean have they ever taken a history class in this country? Do people ever think that Affirmative action helps qualified URMs to stand a chance at getting into schools that have snobbed them because of the color of their skin in the past. It makes me so mad when I keep having my non URM colleagues make stupid comments over and over again. One even had the audacity to tell me that he knew that I was unqualified for my undergrad school and when I told him what I scored on the SATs and how he could verify it with the College Board his jaw dropped. Yes, believe it or not most of us URMs if not all who get into schools that traditionally look down on us are yes QUALIFIED (at least I think adcoms are not stupid and definitely do not want their schools reputations to be tainted)!!

HEY! Wakeup we live in a country called America. This is a capitilist country, not some grab ass socialist country. If you are going to start bitching about white privelage and what not than I feel sorry for you. The bottom line is that URM status is just AA incognito, and there is no place for it in medicine.

I agree with the poster above. Everyone knows that they look at more than just MCATs and GPAs when considering students. Also, people like to say that so-and-so got into X university with stats that were below average for that school. Well yah! what's an average? some got below, some got above.

You can't just look at a persons MCAT, GPA, and race to determine whether or not he/she is qualified. There is a reason for all the stuff they make us do (Secondaries, extracurriculars, volunteering, shadowing, references/recommendation, interviews)

So what I'm trying to say is that you can't JUST look at marks, becuase marks are only a portion of the procress. Before you judge a statement like "a URM with a 3.2 and 28 got into Harvard" by saying that he/she is not qualified, look more into it. maybe the rest of this person's application held something that you had never thought of!

I am not for AA but I think that some of you all don't like to see others with oppurtunities. The injustices that face URM is mountainful, and the adcom realizes that fact. I am a black male and I realize that a lot of black males are in prison then they are in college. There are 600,000 black males in college and 800,000 black males in prison. (i rounded the numbers) You guys are acting like AA is senting URM to prison and they are becoming a threat to soceity. AA is giving URM a chance to show that someone do care if they live or die. When you are growing up in the project (I know personally), survival is a must because your life is going to be threatened lots of time. AFRICAN-AMERICAN BEEN ON NORTH AMERICA FOR ABOUT ~465 YEARS, 300 BEEN SLAVERY, ~120 BEEN LEGAL DISCRIMINATION, ~40 WE ARE CONSIDER "EQUAL."
URM are usually at earlier age labelled ******ed (I was labelled that, I latered skipped 2 grades). I am sick and tired of you all whining. I don't see anyone of you all talking about becoming teachers that HELP URM then put them down. I don't see anyone saying lets be POLICE OFFICER so we can stop the perpuation of hate crime. True, we live in a capitalistic soceity that is based on competition. Winners go on to get what they aim for and loser do something that they don't want to do. There is no place for a lot of things in medicine however it still exist. So when you get rid of those other things, get rid of medicine. ok, buddy. thank you 👍
