So in regards to your current class, how many students are there that range from age 30-35? 36-40? 41-50? And 51+? I know the majority are below 30, but just want it to see a class proportion. Also, how do the younger students get along/socialize with the age group students mentioned?

MS1 with a 96 person class

The vast majority (maybe 75%) are under 30, with about 60% being in the 20-25 y/o range). The rest are early thirties with one or two above 35 and one above 40.

Here are the stats straight from my orientation notes:

13% 30+
5% 27-29
39% 24-36
43% 21-23

Age Range 19----41
Average Age 25.1


I find that the younger students (including myself) get along perfectly well with the non traditional individuals. The only exception to this would include those older individuals (I am looking at you ex-health care workers) who blab about their previous knowledge....🙄

Mostly a younger class like you'd expect, but we've got a few people in their 30s and (maybe?) into their 40s. We all get along just fine. Maybe we're all still on the honeymoon.

These people may be your best friends come 3rd year...depending on the quality of their healthcare experience. 👍 Now, if they blab in a condescending way, I totally get why you'd be annoyed at that.

Third year here. We have a few people in their 30s (mid). Most are mid mid 20s.

My class of 162 had probably a half-dozen in their mid-30s. There were 2 who were older than that - me, who turned 45 in the third week of school, and a guy who was 55 (recently-retired teacher who had always wanted to be a doctor).

As far as social relationships - excellent. I was a little stand-offish in the first semester but I quickly realized that, even though many of my classmates were 20 years younger than me, we had many personality characteristics in common and faced many of the same challenges. Age doesn't matter in a foxhole. I probably related a little more to the people in their 30s, but I have close friends from all age groups in my class. I tease a lot about being older, but now most days I just forget about it.

I attend most of the social events, and enjoy them. I do avoid a few of the really boozy bashes - I have absolutely no problem with young people in their 20s blowing off steam with a lot of alcohol - but I just don't enjoy that anymore - so they have their fun without the "only real adult in the room" (as I have been called). I did go on an overnight camping/river rafting trip with my classmates - and had a blast.

::Hurt look:: I answer questions when I'm asked about something... but I was a CPA and a financial planner/administrator in healthcare for 20 years before med school. Many questions I get come from the attendings, not the students - attendings who have a very poor understanding of hospital finance... I think that's part of the reason I was admitted at my old age - I came over from the "dark side" of hospital administration <g>.
