Ahhh, is it really worth going to NYU or should I reapply???

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
With your GPA, you should be happy to have even gotten into NYU. It might be really hard to get into your state school with your stats unless you do post-bacc of course then that is another story.

Expect to earn $90,000 - $120,000 straight out of school as an associate or part-time between a few places. After tax you will take home (assuming you make $100,000) about $60,000 net or $5000 monthly. If you're on a 30 year repayment program, that's $2600 a month. Now, I don't know about you but living off 2400 a month as a doctor is pretty shi*ty when your friend from college is taking home 5-6k/monthly working as an accountant. Now if you have really good connections or open your own practice, then you'll be earning way more money to repay your loans. Which at this point, it wouldn't matter if you have huge loans because you will have the necessary funds to do whatever you want.

Bottom line is you're always going to be in debt, whether student loans, mortgage or business practice.

i totally feel you, even though i didnt get in anywhere yet, the schools at which i feel have a shot at are going to get me into $350+ debt. Very very scary, but then again I would not think twice if i got an acceptance- yes, the debt is enormous, but if you think about it- even if you will be making $50-70/yr (after all the debt payments) thats ok because even if you take home as much as someone who just graduated from college, you are a DOCTOR, you will ALWAYS have a job no matter how bad the economy is and you will do what you love for the rest of your life<--- that is the biggest accomplishment to me, enjoying going to work everyday.

Not true ...lol

If you are so worried about being in debt maybe you should look into military dentistry. They will give you a 20k signing bonus, pay for school, you will make around 70K right out of school, and you don't have to pay for your benefits and malpractice insurance. The big downfalls are you have little control of where you live after school and you may not really like the other stuff that comes along with being in the military. I would say it is worth looking into though.

I have a friend who is a dentist without going to dental school. He works in his shed with pilers...killing.

Interesting post...Dad...

I can't see why OP even post this thread. If you don't want to go to that school, why did you apply in the first place?

BTW, if you are going to reapply, GL

So I honestly cannot get over the price of NYU - it's 90k/year and I would graduate with a debt of close to 400k which i think is ridiculous! So, I know many people on this thread might say that I'm taking NYU or getting into dental school for granted but i don't know if the school is worth the money u pay for.

so by the time i graduate college this may, my stats will be 21/21/20 dat score and ~3.3gpa/3.05 sgpa - so with those stats, I'm REALLYYYY confused on what to do:

1) should i go to nyu and take the huge debt?
2)should i go to nyu and attempt to transfer to another school after my 1st year (im not sure how easy it is to transfer either?)
3) should i reapply this summer and apply super super early in june instead of in august like i did this past year? (don't know how much 2 months earlier will make a difference?)
OR
4) should i do a post-bacc program for a year and then reapply (however, i hate having to lose 2 years in the process by the time i start dental school!)

NYU is the only schoool ive been accepted to but im still waiting to hear back for interview invites from bu, tufts, temple, but i dunno how good its looking at this point so im trying to figure out my next step! ahhh any help would be awesome 🙂 thanks guysss

Talk with a dentist or two, or three. Their advice is prob the best you can get in a situation like this! Good luck.

There are many applicants who are waiting to even get an interview from NYU. I wonder whether you really want to go to dental school because there many people with only one acceptance and they are more than happy to start dental school next year.

I wouldn't question the OP's motives in dentistry at all just because he/she isn't ready to drop 400K at a moment's notice to enroll at NYU. If anything, flycd05 is smart to research and question such a huge commitment rather than blindly saying yes. I love my career as a dentist and I am looking forward to see where it takes me, but at the end of the day it is a job just like anything other and it is very important to consider the financial aspect of this decision. There are discussions on Dentaltown all the time about how crazy the cost of dental school tuition has become and how it is even crazier that so many young students blindly sign up without even thinking or researching how such a debt load might change your life down the line.

Exactly. Not everyone has their parents paying for the student loans.

Who's parents are paying for student loans? Can I be adopted??

I had a similar, but not really, situation as the OP. I was accepted at Case off the waitlist and declined due to the huge burden of $75k+ a year. However, I had just retaken my DAT and gotten 22/21/23 and had a GPA of 3.65 and sGPA of 3.60. I also had just started a good new job and signed a lease on my apartment... so I guess it's not that similar.

With your GPA and the steep upward trend of applicants each year I wouldn't risk waiting another year. If 90k/year was too much you'd hear 140 stories a year about newly graduated dentists declaring bankruptcy from NYU. You don't want to waste your time in a master's program, and your money.

I think the best option for you is the Armed Forces.

Good luck.

Even if you declare bankruptcy you still CAN'T escape from student loans. It'll follow you until you die, or have your hand cut off.

Nice... too bad I said that about 10 posts before you. You could have just quoted me to make it easier for yourself.:claps:🙄

The students with 400K in educational debt haven't gotten out there yet. Someone already correctly said you can't get rid of educational debt in bankruptcy. There is a website that people bring up on here from time to time that lists people who have defaulted on their student loans. I think chiropractors had the highest number of people on that list. $400K educational debt might not sound so bad, but couple that with a mortgage and practice loan after you graduate and now you've hit a million. If anyone on here tells me a million dollar loan for a newly graduated dentist is no big deal, I will say good luck unless you are moving extremely rural.

You make a very good point.

Jesus Christ, I hate this attitude. Every time someone hesitates about anything at all, someone on this board has to get all high and mighty and say "I question your dedication" or "You should consider another career." $400,000 of debt is a genuine concern.

OP - I don't know why you would apply to NYU if you knew you didn't want to deal with all that debt. Don't forget the additional costs of living in NYC. But anyway, I think you should go to NYU. You have no way of knowing if you'll get in to dental school again, especially with your GPA when it's more and more competitive to get in every year. I would only re-apply if you didn't like NYU itself as a school and if you feel like you'd be miserable there. But hopefully you only applied to school you actually could see yourself attending.

My parent will likely pay mine, thankfully. They give up everything for my education - I plan on paying them back fully for undergrad and dental school.

Beggars can't be choosers, right? Even if NYU is the only shcool you get into, be grateful for it, some people apply several times to several schools and never get in anywhere. You have to realize what an advantaged position youre in. Although being almost half a million dollars in dbt is scary, do you know how much dentists make? Seriously i wouldn't mind being a million dollars in debt if i could become a dentist! A career like that pays for its self. Of the above options, confirming your acceptance to NYU is the only reasonable option you have given yourself.

good luck!

Curious what the OP ended up deciding seeing as how I am in the same boat right now

The OP's later post where he is looking for a roommate at NYU in July suggests he went.

No offense man. With those stats, it would be an uphill struggle if you were to reapply. It may take years and tens of thousands of dollars for you to get into a better/cheaper school. You can always apply to a 3 year HPSP.

Take option 1.

Ya..just saw that. Then no posts since. I guess it's a hazy mystery as to which path he/she ended up choosing 🙂

Yeah, if out of my 15 schools I only get into NYU, I will consider it a blessing. I have heard lots of good things amid the good rumors. I will survive off cheap pasta if I have to and commute every day.

😀👍

If I got into an expensive school like this I would 100% apply for a 3-year military scholorship. Why not do that OP and then enjoy your education, NY, and then your years in service as a military dentist.

That way you can serve your country as an officer, have school paid for and start civilian life thereafter.

I mean, no doubt, NYU would break the bank. You'd have to think twice about specializing or really how well you could pay that debt off. But, out of all the people they graduate, I am sure a good amount of them go on to be successful dentists in life. They wouldn't churn out classes as big as they do destined to fail!

By delaying for 1 year, you are losing one year of your peak income. if you are totally average, that amount is something like 215k. so by delaying for a year you need the school you get accepted to next year to be 400-215 = 185k. subtract more if you take a post-bac in the time off, plus factor in the chance that you might never get accepted again, and that you're losing a year of your life. it is a no brainer to go now, and it isn't close.

I also think living outside the city while you go there would be a big mistake. You're going to end up with 95% of the expense no matter what you do.

Where do you get 215K? Most of my friends who graduated from mcgill here in montreal are earning about 75-90K as new associates. You make a good point..but its not quite the "no brainer" you make it out to be. Speak to some working dentists and new grads..you'll have a better outlook after that. Good luck

he is speaking about peak income ( not new associates), and the ADA stats that is about 200K. and I believe he was speaking about the capitalistic U.S, not Canada.
