Had a question about the HPSP scholarship.

I want to know if I accept a HPSP scholarship, if I could take a year off during 3-4 yr.

Some people have said no, but what about people who are on a dual degree program which takes 5 yrs??? and have the HPSP schoalrship. Isn't it the same difference???

Please post anything that helps. Thanks.

My recruiter specifically said no and then proceeded to follow up a week later with a sample contract of an person who already signed..name and information colored out. It basically said the only way you could do it is if you have a traumatic experience or time in school and are struggling academically and the school wants you to takk leave. They MIGHT approve it...if they don't they still have the right to pull you from HPSP and put you on other service. SO, they don't encourage doing that just to try to do a year of research..ie beating the system. (Not that you were thinking about that...)

The one I read also said you can't do a dual degree program. They don't need MD/PhDs, MBAs, etc.

The scholarship is 100% about the needs of the military and 0% about your personal needs.

From what I understand, DoctorInSpace is pursuing a 1 year OMM Fellowship between 2nd and 3rd year, and has permission to do so. Initially, I was interested in pursuing a dual degree and was told it could work out but you lose your stipend, health insurance coverage, etc. from the military. As we all know, however, the needs of the AF come first. The answer will probably change each time you talk to someone else.

Also, you need to understand this: recruiters don't know a whole lot. If you want questions answered, you need to speak to the person who has the authority to make decisions regarding your query. Talking to anyone else = 👎 .

Indeed. Then they can change their mind when you sign. Don't put your life in someone else's hands...

Yeah I wanted to pursue a MBA.

So who are these people with the "right" authority to talk to??

Any numbers to call?

And thanks for the help.

Oh yeah also, what do you mean by losing your stipend? I understand if they dont reimburse you for that one year away but how bout the rest of the scholarship??

I would start by contacting Maj Frisco at the Air Force Institute of Technology.

With the four year scholarship, they will pay 4 years of tuition plus monthly stipend of approx $1250. If it takes you five years to complete school (say you were having academic issues and decelerated) then the AF would still only pay 4 years of tuition plus stipend for 4 years... the 5th year you would not receive stipend monies. My school does not charge tuition the fifth/last year. I think that this is the norm, but I'm not sure.
