I am considering applying for the Air Force scholarship for dental school. I wanted to know what kind of committment that they required for you while in dental school. I know that sometime they require a summer training program, but i wanted to know exactly the number of weeks and how many times they require you to go. Any other information about the scholarship would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone ever been called back because of the four years of inactive reserves duty? That little bit worries me!

I believe its your OBC (or whatever the AF equivalent) one summer, usually before the first year IIRC, and then 3 more 6 week things in the summer.

I know if your school schedule doesnt allow you to have 6 weeks off, they figure something else out.

I am also wondering whether research at your D school for a summer would be an ok 'excuse' to not do one of hte 6 week rotations until after youre done with dental school.

I was wondering this too but not for research. My school offers time during the summer for externships and service projects. Would time spent doing those types of things get you out of the active duty.

You are able to get an externship or some other active duty experience while on HPSP, go for it. You will be much better prepared for what will be expected of you when you come on active duty. I was a 3 yr Optometry HPSP student and had two great active duty tours in the San Antonio area.

In addition to AD pay, you are on TDY status getting TDY per diem, travel pay, etc.
