Yo--

I put B'ham 1st, H'ville 2nd, and said I wouldn't go to Tuskaloosa.

Hopefully since we're early admits we'll get our top choices? When the hell are they sending these letters? It's been since the 9th. And when can we start applying for scholarships?

I'm pretty sure that we will get our campus selections.

I chose only B'ham.

Well, I'm only on my second week waiting for the packet. They want to make it a Christmas present. For scholarships, I believe we need to complete the FAFSA as part of the non-merit based scholarships. Who knows? Maybe the packet will tell us?

😀 :horns:

For the record, the branch campuses are just as good as the birmingham campus. There's a VA in ttown as well as bham (not sure about huntsville), and all have the requisite big 'main' hospital. In fact, if EM is your thing, ttown has the busiest ER of the 3. The main differences are simply that the bigger names in subspecialties will be in bham. However, your campus assignment really only applies to your 3rd year, so you can still do 4th year electives in bham if you want, and get letters. Because the class sizes are smaller and there are no residents (except Family in ttown), you will work much more hands on in the branch campuses as well, as in, you might be first assist in the OR as opposed to retracting while the resident and attending operate (or standing and watching 🙂)

JDovers -- why the tuscaloosa dislike? All the students I've talked to there feel that they're getting a great education...

I just had my interview yesterday, and we're supposed to fill out a campus selection questionnaire. Where is it? I tried looking on the secondary page, and there's nothing.

hey all,
I'm getting kinda worried with UAB. I sent in my secondary in early November and haven't heard anything from them. I am an AL resident and attend a top tier undergrad and have other interviews at Ivy legue schools but haven't heard from my own state school. UAB is one of my top choices b/c it is cheap and really good. Any thoughts? do you think they are backed up?

Is your status "application complete" on the webpage? Meaning--you got those annoying two "other letters" in?

If so, I'd give them a shout. They seem to tolerate questions pretty well. I know they have two different sessions of interviews (before xmas, and after), so they may have already filled the before session up and are waiting to send out more.

Give them a ring.

Where did you go to school?

JDovers -- why the tuscaloosa dislike? All the students I've talked to there feel that they're getting a great education...

My dislike with t-town has nothing to do with the medical education there. I've talked to some kids who have gone there and loved it. To be honest, I almost put down "only birmingham," but my entire family is right outside of h'ville, so there was a lot of pressure to at least put them second.

I've spent the last five years in Dallas, and basically just want to keep living in a larger city. I also want to get an apartment and stay there for four years. And, also, I'm doing the MD/MPH--so I'd be back in birmingham for a year between MS3 and MS4 anyway, which would be annoying if I had to re-move.

So, again, nothing against tuskaloosa.

Did anyone receive the offical packet from UASOM this week?

+pissed+

my application is "Complete and Under Review"

I go to Hopkins

I might give them a call at the end of the week if they don't get back to me.

I have not received a package from USACOM yet. Hopefully it will come soon!

Congrats to everyone for getting UASOM acceptances.

UASOM is my state school, and I would love to go there!

Yeah, I haven't gotten one either. How long do schools normally take to get these things out? Anybody know?

Have you sent in your deposit to hold a spot in the class yet?

Yeah, I called them on Friday to see if they had received it, and they had. I just don't know if I should expect the packet soon (like during Christmas break) or later (like January or March).

Ok, now I am confused and slightly concerned. I got my acceptance email from UASOM on 11/9 but I haven't received my packet or campus assignment. Sounds like others are in the same boat. However, am I supposed to send in a deposit to secure a spot in the class or is that just applicable to South Alabama? I don't recall seeing anything in the acceptance email that I needed to put a check in the mail yet. Thanks in advance for the help! That would really stink if I blew something as simple as that.

We don't owe them any money till we get the acceptance packages. The acceptance letter said:

"No deposit is required at this time. You will have two weeks to complete the Acceptance Offer of Admissions and submit a deposit to reserve your place in the class after you receive the letter containing your campus assignment."

So...maybe one day they'll send us these acceptance packages.

For those of you who have interviewed at South, what time does the day end b/c I would like to schedule a flight the day of the interview. The note says 1pm, but I'm not sure how exact that is. Any info would be appreciated.

similar situation here... got the UAB acceptance email on 11/3 with no campus assignment; it specifically stated not to send a deposit until i get a package in the mail. the email states "We will mail your official letter of acceptance as soon as we are able to make a campus assignment. Please be patient as this may require up to four weeks from the time of this email."

i guess we just have to wait for that thick envelope

The day I interviewed we ended at about 2:00. I think that you can miss the tours at the end of the day if you have to make a flight. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I think my interview ended around 2:30 or 3:00. I'm pretty sure my flight left Pensacola at 7:00. That gave me enough time to drive to Pensacola, eat at a sit-down restaurant, and be at the airport about an hour and a half early. That timing worked out well for me, but obviously I could have done things a little quicker and had an earlier flight. But it definitely takes about an hour to get to P'cola, so don't cut it too close! Good luck at your interview; don't worry, it's really relaxed, and I got pretty standard questions. Nothing too crazy or out of the ordinary.

Are you sure you didn't just miss it? They may be doing things differently this year, but here's what my email said:

Dear Mr. MattD:

It is a pleasure to inform you that the Committee of Admissions has approved
your application to matriculate in the year 2006 entering class as a first-year
student in the University of Alabama School of Medicine ...

...
Campus Assignment:
Your first two years (basic sciences) will be spent entirely in Birmingham.
Based on your campus selection questionnaire and the positions available at the
time of your acceptance, you are assigned to the Birmingham campus for your
clinical experience in the third and fourth years.

On behalf of the faculty and administration of the School of Medicine, please
accept our heartiest congratulations on your significant achievements as you
have pursued your goal to study medicine. A cordial welcome is extended to you
to become a member of our student body. If you wish to discuss any aspects of
your future academic life, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Nathan B. Smith, M.D.
Assistant Dean for Admissions

Was there not a similar 'campus assignment' section in your letter?

Hey -

No, they haven't made the campus assignment yet for me or for anyone else that I can tell from SDN. JDover is correct. I went back and checked my email and it was worded exactly like his email. So, no $$ until the thick envelope arrives!

Thank you though for the advice. I'm not sure what is taking so long with the campus assignment part. I only put down Bham (I'm not anti T-town or Hville - I've got two kids in elem. school and a husband working downtown) so I can't imagine it is already full 😛. I could be proven wrong!

OK, I better stop procrastinating and resume studying for this d--- Biochem test. Ugh.

Have any interviewees from Nov.16 gotten an acceptance?

I don't think so. I think the last acceptances I heard about on this thread were a few days before you. I think I'm in the same boat as you (I interviewed on Nov. 30), assuming that you're talking about UASOM.

Could some of the students that have gotten accepted to UASOM post their stats?

check my MDApps, yo.

For all of you MS1-upwards who attended UASOM, do you recommend any books to read? I have to fill my time with something productive other than my studying for finals. :horns:

does anyone know how the ad com scores applicants? (%mcat, gpa, interview etc) i bombed one of my interviews

Does anyone know when the next selection committee meeting is for UASOM? :-( This waiting around is starting to get to me. (yes, I know its Sunday, but I'm neurotic)

As far as reading goes, I'd recommend anything you enjoy reading. You won't have time to read for pleasure once school starts. That said, if you HAVE to read something medically related, Tracy Kidder's Mountains Beyond Mountains is a fantastic read, although Pence doesn't require it any more. When you get the email with your ethics learning objectives, it would be a good idea to go ahead and pick up his textbooks and go ahead and do them, that way you will have all your study materials done before school starts. Once the year begins you'll likely be spending tons of time studying for anatomy, and won't feel like reading ethics. This year the only ethics 'novel' he required was Jamie Weisman's As I Live and Breathe. I didn't enjoy the book, but questions did come from it. There's no point in trying to start studying anatomy or anything ahead of time, as the subject is too broad and you should focus on what the professors tell you to. Also, I have no idea what the new curriculum will look like for you guys.

Good luck!

I was wondering through BYU's vast library last week and ran across Brave New Bioethics by Pence. I read the entire book in a day. Well, I guess I need to go over to the library and get check out his new book for 2007.

Did any of you accepted to UAB receive any kind of scholarship? If not, do you know at which stage of the process they generally offer these? (i.e., at the time of acceptance, at the time of financial aid submission, on a specific date, etc.?)

JDovers, XildUpNawth, and the rest of the UASOM 2011 accepted people,

Have any of you received the packet from UASOM?

I remember the email said it would arrive in December, correct? Or is it near the first of the year?

:horns:

No packet yet here. I can't remember when they said to expect it. It makes me nervous being told I don't need to respond yet to their offer, but not having anything in print.

Nothing here.

It said in my email that it may take "up to three weeks" to get the packet. Well, that was a while ago.

Maybe some brave soul should call....

As for scholarships--nada. That's in the packet we're all waiting to get.

P.S. Did anyone get a "hold card" from south? Because I haven't gotten anything?

I sent an email, but I do not have a reply.

We will see.

+pity+

I called them and the secretary told me that hold cards and acceptances are going out today. Hopefully, we'll hear something by the end of the week.

Good luck everyone who is hoping to hear from South Alabama!

I received an email back from Julie. She referred me to look at this page

http://main.uab.edu/uasom/show.asp?durki=69741

It seems that not enough people are being flexible for the campus selection.

Hummm... Which campus would that include? *thinks* B'ham? or Huntsville or Tuscaloosa?

It would seem to me that this wouldn't be a problem if they gave campus selections on a first come, first serve basis?

People interviewed this early are only putting one campus b/c they assume there are tons of slots still open. What happened?

It's totally b'ham.

It would have been very simple to do the first come first serve basis.

Yikes. I assumed (apparently incorrectly!) that there wouldn't be a problem on that front. I just took a look at that webpage and now I am getting worried again. Is there no end to the stress associated with this stuff?!? 😱

I didn't apply anywhere else so I'm hoping I'm not going down in flames over the campus issue. Wouldn't that be classic?

I take it nobody has heard from USACOM or UASOM since the last round :-( this waiting is killing me

I've already done a little home work on Tuscaloosa and H'ville. I should have put H'ville as my second preference, but at the time, I only put B'ham.

I like a few other people on this forum would just like a piece of paper saying yes, you are in. Pay your money. Your spot is saved.
